WUYA Gets Zhang Ziyi's Nod (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
March 29, 2002

According to Xiaoxiang Morning Post, the author of Wuya (Crow) said Zhang Ziyi has finally committed herself to the movie version of her novel. She said, "Zhang Ziyi told me she finished reading the book with tear in her eyes. She has been fully conquered by the courage and endurance of the heroine Hailun (Helen ?) in the novel."

Wuya is woman writer Jiu Dan's semi-biographic novel, about "the lives of China-born xiaolongnu or little dragon girls who arrive (Singapore) as students but end up as hostesses, mistresses and prostitutes in their pursuit of the good life."*. Though many praise the book for its brazen honesty, others, including many Chinese students have lived in Singapore, say the book is nothing but pure fiction.

Ziyi And Leo Wanted For TURANDOT (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
March 29, 2002

Beijing Morning News reports Chinese director Zheng Xiaolong is planning a movie version of Giacomo Puccini's classic opera Turandot. He said Zhang Ziyi has volunteered for the role of the ruthless Chinese princess and the movie's investor wants Leonardo DiCapiro to be the exiled European prince. The story will be set in the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368) when China was ruled by Mongol emperors and when Marco Polo traveled to China (if it really happened). While still working on the script and talking to more investors, Zheng Xiaolong has imaged what the movie would look like - a computer generated City of Dadu (Beijing). In 1998, a live stage performance was held inside the Forbidden City, with Zhang Yimou as the production director.

The Runelords Series

Like Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Runelords is a dark fantasy series set in a medieval-like world written by David Farland. It tells a tale of how young Runelord Gaborn, later the Earth King, struggled to fight the evil forces against him and his people.

The movie will likely be based on the first book The Sum of All Men, unless they want to make all three together, like what happened to Lord of the Rings.

David Farland is a full-time sci-fi and fantasy novelist, whose works includes several books from the Star Wars series and The Mummy Chronicles (under his real name Dave Wolverton).

Book I:

The Sum of All Men

Book II:

Brotherhood of the Wolf

Book III:

Guilin

Guilin is located in Guangxi Region of Southwest China. Filled with karst or limestone mountains, it is a very popular tourist destination in Asia. Under millions millions years of erosion by water, the limestone ground has transformed to countless small mountains and caves, creating a kind of scenery called karst (named after Kras region in the former Yugoslavia).

Shangri-La

In his novel Lost Horizon published in 1933, James Hilton described a mythical utopia in Tibet called Shangri-La. Four years later it was adopted to the big screen by producer director Frank Capra. In recent years, several scholars have concluded James Hilton's Shangri-La was created based on a National Geographic article on Diqing region in Yunnan Province, east of Tibet. Last year, Zhongdian County, the capital of Diqing, has changed its name to Shangri-La. (Shangri-La was originated from local Tibetan language, meaning "Sun and Moon in the Heart", which was originated from Moonlight Town and Sunlight Town, built from the Tang to Song Dynasty (618 - 1279))

HERO News 57 - Zhang Ziyi Talked About Her HEROic Experience On Video (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
March 22, 2002

Here are two videos of Zhang Ziyi. The first one was recorded in last year (probably December) on the set for her Vogue Taiwan photo shots, in which she briefly talked about her experience with HERO. The second one was recorded on February 28 when she was honored as the Goodwill Ambassador of Tibet Development Fund. Click images to watch the videos.

The following is the transcript of the first video:

Hello, everyone! I am Zhang Ziyi. Haven't seen you for a long time.

Zhang Ziyi Rumors:

Perhaps some are real and some are not. I prefer this way to chat with people face to face, to let the audiences see me only through a TV screen. Sometimes, I was very mad about those fabricated rumors, but tried to think about it again, perhaps they were just seasonings of life. Maybe (they are something) every entertainer will encounter. I think, slowly, be happy or be angry, I will have a very normal attitude to deal with them.

HEROic Experience:

Spent five months with HERO to watch Maggie Cheung, to watch Leung Chiu-wai, and to watch Jet Li, I feel I have attended a very precious class. So, ... hope I can learn something.

Leon Lai:

I went to Hong Kong for his concert, then we had a dinners and a chat. Because he is from Beijing too, I felt it was so hard to meet someone from your hometown in a strange land. We just talked about our memories of Beijing. So the root will never change.

WU YA (CROW)?

My friends wanted to say this (rumor) was so loud. But no one has ever talked to me and invited me to join. Not even today. So I think it was the studio's misunderstanding or some kind of behavior of them.

(note: this CROW is not related to the same name Hollywood franchise)

How to Manage Money

I don't have much to buy. Just buying clothing, but many times they are provided by sponsors. Then , eh ... (reporter: all the money you earned was given to your mom) Right, all the money is in my mother's place. Don't know how much and (I) never ask.

Goes to the Hollywood?

Not for me. (In there) I can't find fried source noodle (a popular Beijing local dish). (Laugh) Actually I think the working environment is just for to work there not for to live there. I just go there to ... eh ... work. I feel I cannot leave Beijing and cannot leave China. I hope the priority of my career in the future will be in China.

Plan for 2002

There are several projects for next year (2002) are still in talk. But I think next year will make me very ... eh .. very excited and ... very motivated.

Quentin Tarantino Talks About KILL BILL And Himself (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

March 16, 2002

Quentin Tarantino during the interview

On March 6, Quentin Tarantino traveled to Beijing to make preparation of the shooting of KILL BILL which will start in June. Two days later he left for Shanghai to meet Liu Kia-liang, who has started working on DRUNKEN MONKEY. The following is the translation of an exclusive interview conducted by Beijing Youth and its sister paper Beijing Today.

Quentin Tarantino talked about how Shaw Brothers kung-fu movies and Italian westerns influenced his life, how painful it is to wrote the script, how he works with cast and crew from China and Japan, how he waited Uma Thurman to have her baby, so and so.

The interview was translated from English to Chinese and back to English again, therefore something might be lost along the translation. But I have tried to restore Quentin Tarantino's original words.

Wu Jing from Beijing, Liu Chia-liang's nephew Liu Yong-jian from Hong Kong and Yao Yao from Taiwan will form the love-triangle in the movie. According to Liu Chia-liang, story of DRUNKEN MONKEY is very simple: Both Wu Jing and Liu Yong-jian have fallen in love with Yao Yao and a story of love, hate and revenge for families starts from here. "My movie has no specially effects, all real kung-fu, and in a comedic style" said Liu Chia-liang, "our specially effects probably can never surpass the American's, but our kung-fu movies are something the American can never be able to make. Many American are curious how come that small Chinese guy can have the strength that powerful?" He is hoping to "bring back the audiences who love kung-fu movies" and he may make more should this one be successful. Beside him, two of his brothers, Chia-rong and Chia-hui, as well as several of his students, also joined the production. 66 year-old Liu Chia-liang starts his martial art training at the age of 9 and since 1975 he has made 19 kung-fu movies for Shaw Brothers. Stephen Chiu's SHAOLIN SOCCER has broken Hong Kong box-office record last year, and Feng Xiaogang's BIG SHOT'S FUNERAL released last year, staring Ge You, Rosamund Kwan and Donald Sutherland, also broke the record set by Feng himself in the mainland China. Both movies will have wider release worldwide this year.

Zhou Xun Might Join CROUCHING TIGER Prequel (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
March 9, 2002

Producer of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON and the prequel PRECIOUS SWORD, GOLD HAIRPIN, Hsu Li-kong, has promised to introduce Chinese actress Zhou Xun to director Ang Lee for this upcoming prequel. In exchange, Zhou Xun has agreed to remain single until the shooting is over because Hsu wanted Zhou to focus on her role. Just finished directing TV series JÜ ZI HONG LE (translation: MANDARIN ORANGE HAS TURN RED) with Zhou Xun as the lead, Hsu has been impressed by her acting and the dance training she received.

Here is the speculation: if Michelle Yeoh returns as Yu Hsu-lien, the only major role left for her will be Xie Cui Xian, another love interest of Li Mu Bai and a non-fighting role, from the original novel. Unless they can add a new role or let her replace Michelle Yeoh.

Zhou Xun has started to draw people's attention by playing the blind girl in Chen Kaige's EMPEROR AND THE ASSASSIN in 1996. Since then she has played lead in many films like SUZHOU RIVER, BEIJING BICYCLE, HOLLYWOOD HONG KONG, and BALZC ET LA PETITE TAILLEUSE CHINOISE, as well as numerous TV series.

Gale Anne Hurd Wants Zhang Ziyi Be Her JADE (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
March 8, 2002
Gale Anne Hurd, who had helped to bring both both TERMINATORs, ALIENS and THE ABYSS alive, is planning the big screen live action version of Chaos Comics'  JADE and she wants no one but Zhang Ziyi to play the lead. However, no word has been heard from Zhang Ziyi herself.

"Jade, a 4000-year-old vampire-sorceress has been the leader of a powerful, Shanghai crime family for over a millennia, a position she inherited from her father. For ages, it was a position she filled based upon honor. Her competitors believed "Jade" a title given to the woman who controlled the family in each generation.

In the 20th century, she came to believe that China had lost much of its honor and dignity. Now, in an effort to restore honor, she is using her supernatural powers to bring all the other Triad families under her control and through them, take control of China itself. But the Triads are not going to capitulate quietly. It掇 going to be bloody. Very bloody. Welcome to the world of Jade."

HERO News 56 -
Ching Siu-tung: HERO Will Be More Aesthetic And Romantic Than CROUCHING TIGER (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
March 6, 2002
Action director Ching Siu-tung has spoken out about HERO for the first time. He said, "QIN YONG (A TERRA-COTTA WARRIOR), XIAO AO JIANG HU ZHI DONG FANG BU BAI (EAST IS RED / SWORDSMAN III) and SIN NUI YAU MAN (A CHINESE GHOST STORY) are my favorite. Scenes from QIN YONG were designed in the style learned from Akira Kurosawa's RAN. (QING YONG and HERO) are all telling stories from the Qin Dynasty (actually the time period from HERO is a little bit earlier), but after more than a decade (since QIN YONG), the concept and style of the action sequences in HERO are different. Visuals in HERO are designed to look like ancient Chinese paintings and action sequences are more aesthetic and rhythmic. There is a scene in which Maggie Cheung and Zhang Ziyi fighting and chasing among floating golden leaves in a woods. In another scene Jet Li must jump of a cliff and we invited an athlete from Chinese National Gymnastic Team to demonstrate just for making the sequence more coherent and rhythmic. Watching the actions in HERO you can feel the actors are dancing in the air. It will be more aesthetic and romantic than CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON."

When being asked whether more weapons have been used in HERO just like in the fight scene with Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi inside the escort company in CROUCHING TIGER, Ching said

"characters from HERO won't use more weapons, but we designed various styles and moves for fights between same kind of weapons, to let the audiences see styles can be different even though the weapons are the same. Also, action sequences were designed to consist with the visuals and the artistic climates. In different environments and atmospheres, the actions sequences are in different forms and moves."

While talking about how to deal with actors with no martial art trainings, he said, "we tried to conceal their physical limitations and let them bring out their best. Maggie Cheung and Zhang Ziyi are pretty good dancers. Based on their figures, the moves I designed for them do not have too much strength but can let them show their bodies and postures. Leung Chiu-wai never received any martial art training and his ability of doing actions is not very good. But he can show very rich facial expressions and and bring out a man's emotions during a fight. Therefore we just shot his moves from different Angles consisted with his facial expressions to help him do his action scenes. For different actors and characters, I designed different styles and moves for them."

Ching said director Zhang Yimou is very good at showing people's relations and creating characters. While working on HERO, he  tried to learn from Zhang Yimou on how to design plots and how to handle dramatic scenes. He said he was admiring Zhang Yimou's talent. Ching said HERO is a different kind of martial art film with very unique storytelling style, visuals and color presents. He said he had done his best. Because the post-production including CG effects has yet started, he did not know what the final print really looks like, but he said it will be better than CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON.

Last Scene Of HIGHBINDERS (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
March 6, 2002
In this scene, Jackie Chan's character drowned while attempted to save a kidnapped boy from a container submerged in the sea. They spent three days working inside a swimming pool for the scene which will show up in the very early of the film and probably will not last more than five minutes on screen. More than a dozen of identical suits were prepared for Jackie Chan and he had to change suits between takes. Large amount of bleach powder were dumped into the cold water which has made his skin brighter than ever. Each time Jackie Chan climbed out of the pool, he used bottled water to wash his eyes. In addition he had to wear a 20 pound lead brick to make sure he can sink. Over a thousand of light sticks were put on the bottom of the
pool to make the scene very colorful. To be safe, mats were placed around the pool, medical personnel were standing by and more than ten divers were in the pool.

Zhang Ziyi Is Willing To Be Hollywood's Flavoring For Improving Herself (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
March 5, 2002
Last Sunday Zhang Ziyi met Yang Jinsong from Beijing Times at a Starbucks in Beijing. In the interview, Zhang Ziyi said she would take either GOOD COOK, LIKE MUSIC or  PURPLE BUTTERFLY as her next project. Shooting of GOOD COOK, LIKE MUSIC was supposed to start this month, but Adam Sandler was still working on his current one. Meanwhile she is still in negotiation for the leading role in Lou Ye's PURPLE BUTTERFLY. She has not decided to join THE CHAMBERMAID, in which only a small role was offered.

About the Hollywood, she said, "Jet Li, Jackie or Chow Yun-fat, our Chinese actors are in fact ther Hollywood's flavorings, which I have already realized long time ago. The Hollywood represents the mainstream of English language cinemas and few Chinese actors are big players in it. Our advantage is just martial art, which is very fresh for the Hollywood, therefore we are welcomed. CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON earned 100 million in the States and RUSH HOUR 2 got 200 million. Even though I played supporting roles, for actors from mainland China to have this kind of achievement, I am the first. I never wanted to sleep on my luck in the Hollywood and never felt too sad for Chinese actors' awkward position in the Hollywood. "Do not be delighted for wealth and do not feel sad for yourself (from an ancient Chinese text)." I don't know whether this is suitable or not. But it would be inappropriate to call it "feeling cold at the top (meaning feeling lonely and isolated after being famous. From Shui Diao Ge Tou, a poet by Su Shi written in 1076)."

Zhang Ziyi said she only took movies, no TV series and no record deals. "I am going to the Hollywood to learn something. What I learned will be an asset once Chinese cinema flourishes again. By then, I might be doing movies productions in China. To improve myself, I am willing to be a flavoring for the Hollywood; for cinema, for Chinese entertainment industry, I am willing to be like a hard meditating monk. But my heart feels very warm because many people like me even though I have made very few movies. The scarf I am wearing was given by a fan and I was wearing it while in America (during the Chinese New Year).

Right next day, she received a phone call from a foreign embassy in which one million yuan (US$ 120 thousand) donation was offered. Now she is in the States wearing a milky-moustache for a "Got Milk" ad.

Cannes Thirsts For HERO And 2046 (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
March 1, 2002
Taiwan's United News Net just reported the organizer of this year's Cannes Film Festival is hoping to add Zhang Yimou's HERO and Wong Kar-wai's 2046 to their list. However, filming of HERO has just wrapped and the post-production, involving large amount of CG works, may take months to complete. Can they really finish it before May, in which the festival will be held? Two years ago, Ang Lee's crew worked round the clock to try to make a rush delivery of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON to Cannes. They finally made it, but not without some minor flaws, very minor of cause. One example can be seen in the famous restaurant fight scenes. The wire holding Zhang Ziyi, which was supposed to be removed digitally, was accidentally left behind on a few frames. (Click here to see the pictures). 2046 is even more hopeless because Wong Kar-wai has planed to scrap everything he has shot so far and start it all over again.

Several films have almost made to Cannes, including Steven Soderbergh's FULL FRONTAL, Mike Leigh's ALL OR NOTHING, an untitled film by Albas(?), David Cronenberg's SPIDER, Atom Egoyan's ARARAT, and Manoel de Oliveira's JOIA dE FAMILIA; several films are hopeful contenders, including Chinese director Tian Zhuangzhuang's XIAO CHENG ZHI CHUN (SPRING IN A SMALL TOWN), a remake of 1940's same name classic by Fei Mu, Dai Sijie's Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, Oliver Assayas (Maggie Cheung's husband)'s DEMONLOVER, Roman Polanski's THE PIANIST, Woody Allen's HOLLYWOOD ENDING,  Brian De Palma's FEMME FATALE and Gus Van Sant's GERRY; and a few might be admitted in the last minute including Sam Mendes' ROAD TO PERDITION and Philip Noyce's THE QUIET AMERICAN (photographed by Christopher Doyle who was also the director of cinematography of HERO).
