Michelle Yeoh Starts Playing MASKED CRUSADER In Beijing (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

March 29, 2003

MASKED CRUSADER

Shooting of the futuristic action packed movie has started at Badaling sector of The Great Wall, north-west of Beijing City. Michelle Yeoh is playing "Hawk", a masked superhero. Along with his brother, a police officer, she is trying to stop "Fire Wolf" from destorying human race. A Japanese-style cabinet has been leased to as "Hawk"'s home. Later, Michelle Yoeh will ride a motorcycle flying over The Great Wall. Remember her riding a motorcycle landing on top of a moving rain in SUPERCOP? For that shot, she had to learn how to ride a motorcycle first and then learn how to land on a moving train. By the way, there is also a scene involving an action girl riding a motorcycle on The Great Wall in the recently released trailer of TOMBRAIDER 2. That is not real Angolina Jolie and that is not the real Great Wall. They build a mockup of The Great Wall in English countryside. All I can say is the the English countryside remains as English countryside and makers of the movie have no clue of what the real Great Wall looks like (they have no clue of what Shanghai looks either). Anyway, BMW has sponsored Michelle Yeoh with 16 of their finest motorcycles.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS - More Dairy, More Pictures And More Jackie Chan (Various)

March 27, 2003

Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. Photo: SammoHung.com

Here (left) is the first shot of Jackie Chan and his old buddy Sammo Hung, who is doing a cameo in the film. According to two Hong Kong paper, Oriental Daily and Sing Pao, they are in a "Chinese village". But, the cart just does not look very Chinese - the wheels are too big. Since the set build in the Thai island Krabi also includes Indian, Malaysian and American sectors, I am also worried about the designers did not get the first two sectors right. Anyway, according to Oriental Daily, nearly US$4 million has been spent on building the set and they are only going to stay there for three weeks. According to The Hollywood Reporter, effect shop Rhythm & Hues (DAREDEVIL, X2, CAT IN THE HAT) will cater the a large portion of the film's CG shots (thanks to Marie M).

Jackie Chan' dairies from March 8th to 16th have been posted at his official site: click here (Thanks to Marie M and "pinoy") He mentioned Hong Kong super model turned actor Maggie Q and Japanese Pancrase wrestler Kengo are playing two Scorpion Agents.

Jackie Chan Shows Us His Diary And Shots From The Set Of AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS

(Jackie Chan Official Site)

March 26, 2003

Jackie Chan has decided to routinely provide us diaries and pictures from the of the 80 DAYS project, just like what he did for us during the filming of SHANGHAI KNIGHTS. According to the diary, a "Chinese village" was built at Krabi in Thailand. Not much of the "village" was shown but from the shot Jackie Chan taken with that black pig, we can see that it is a typical tropical "village". Only the far south tip of China reached the tropical zone. I am just hoping they can do it right and please don't make it looks like they are using the same set from PLATOON. Once again, they altered the history just to preserve Jackie Chan's hair. At that time (the Qing Dynasty) all men were supposed to shave their foreheads.

Rumor: Zhang Ziyi As A Blind Warrior In Zhang Yimou's Second Marital-Art Film (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

March 26, 2003

Zhang Yimou's Next Project

According to Taiwanese media, director Zhang Yimou has reached a deal with Bill Kong, the man behind CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON and HERO, to make another martial-art film set the the Qin or Han Dynasty, a little bit later than the time of HERO. Zhang Ziyi has been picked to play a blind swordswoman. Shooing will start in July and pre-order of international distribution rights has already begun.

We know Zhang Yimou's next project will highly likely be another martial-art film, because he said it himself; we know Bill Kong has launched two very successful film in recent years, so it is very reasonable that Zhang Yimou will work with him again; we know Zhang Yimou and Zhang Ziyi are eagerly to work together again and by July Zhang Ziyi will finish her work in JASMINES BLOOM, so it is possible she will show up in the film and if not, Kill Bill will lobby to get her in because she is such a big draw internationally. About the rest of rumor, believe it or not? You decide.

According to various reports, shooting of YU GUAN YIN is about to start soon in the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan. Based on the same name novel by Hai Yan, the film is about a story of three men falling for the same policewoman, or something like it. Zhao Wei will play the policewoman, and for the three men: Liu Yunlong will play Yan Rui, a white-collar; Hong Kong singer turned actor Nicholas Tse will play Mao Jie, a sort of bad kid; and the policewoman's husband has not been cast. Do not expect an action or thriller, because director Ann Hui is good at telling stories about ordinary people at a very slow path.

2046 Will Miss The Cannes (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

March 24, 2003

Early reports suggests director Wong Kar-Wai will make a rush delivery of his 2046 to this year's Cannes Film Festival. But according to news from an unidentified source, there is little hope for that, because, according to the Taiwanese representative of Wong's company, the filming has not ended and work on a lot of CG effects have not started yet. According to Sina.com, Leung Chiu-Wai has finished all scenes with Zhang Ziyi, and he knew nothing about his scenes with Maggie Cheung, Faye Wong and Lau Kar-ling, because he had not got the script yet. He said Zhang Ziyi was playing a dancer and he had some hot kissing scene with her.

BULLETPROOF MONK To Get Simultaneous Theatrical And Video Release (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

March 16, 2003

Guang Dong Face Audio & Video Production Co. Ltd., one of the video distributors of HERO, has claimed that it would release BULLETPROOF MONK on DVD and VCD in the mainland China on April 18, only two days after the North American theatrical release date. The movie will also hit the theaters in Hong Kong, Taiwan and a few others in Asia around the same time. DVDs and VCDs containing a bootlegged video shot during a test screening held in the States were found  in the market three months ago. Even though the video was in inferior quality, missing the beginning, the ending, some CG effects and audio components, MGM, the movie's distributor, and Motion Picture Association have felt very uneasy about the incident. Such simultaneous release could be the new attempt to fight piracy. Pirated video of a movie usually hits the market in Asia in less than a week after being released in theaters.

Leung Chiu-Wai, Zhang Ziyi Making 2046 In Macao (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

March 7, 2003

Hong Kong's Oriental Daily reports Wong Kar-Wai was shooting 2046 in a small river bank street of Macao. For eight hours, Leung Chiu-Wai and Zhang Ziyi walked back-in-forth at the chilling and raining night and the scene is just over ten second long, according to the paper. Both of them dressed very 1950's and the street, which was probably used to double the old Hong Kong, was also made very old by the crew. The chance of 2046 being premièred at this year's Cannes Film Festival is very slim because the production is not done yet. Zhang Ziyi will fly to Shanghai to prepare for her next film, JASMINES BLOOM.

HERO Breaking News 247 - MiramAxe Chopped 18 Minutes Off (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

March 2, 2003

The original cut of the film is 116-minute long (123-minute according to one paper) but under pressure from MiramAxe, the North American distributor, only 98 minutes left when it was released in Asia. According to Chinese media, the role MiramAxe has played was finally revealed during a dinner held in Beijing last night to celebrate the release of HERO DVD and VCD in China. MiramAxe indeed complained that HERO was too long to be accepted by Americans, and after a long struggle with himself, director Zhang Yimou gave in and personally edited a 98 minute version, the one has been shown and will be shown thoughout the world.  Zhang Yimou even had to cover up for MiramAxe at the film's Beijing première. He said, "I want to make it concentrated, short, running it through with one breath, no dragging, catching the audiences' attention from the beginning to the end, and not allowing them to think for even one moment until the the film is over."

After all these, so far MiramAxe has only paid an unknown amount of deposit of the 20 million they  promised and has refused to do anything to promote the film, even after the film got the Oscar nomination. Critics who have been criticizing HERO for "lacking story and character developing", here is the response - the film has been weakened during the editing.

I am really tired of saying it, but I still have to say - MiramAxe is deliberately destroying foreign cinematic art and the destruction has been not only carried out in the US but also spread to the home countries of those films being destroyed by MiramAxe. Because of that, we will never see the full version the director intended to show us on the big screen.

The full version or the director's cut, formerly known as the extended version, will be released on DVD and VCD in China next month. The good news is we will eventually see the full version; the bad news is neither TV screen nor computer monitor is the prime vehicle for watching a movie. The full version will be released on DVD-9 (single side, double layers). There are even collectable and luxury collectable set on the way.

According to Beijing's Star Daily, Hong Kong director Tsui Hark has agreed to helm QI JIAN XIA TIAN SHAN (literal title: SEVEN SWORDSMEN LEAVE MT. HEAVEN), produced by Chinese Federation of Literary and Art Circles Publishing Corp. Footages to shot with high definition digital video camera will be edited into a 30-episode TV series and a feature film. Based on the same name wuxia novel by Liang Yu-Sheng, it tells a tale of seven warriors at the turn of Ming and Qing Dynasties. After being personally picked by Liang Yu-Sheng, Tsui Hark said, this time, he would keep away from CG effects and go back to the traditional. The price he paid for THE LEGEND OF ZU and BLACK MASK 2 is very high. Both films offers nothing but piles of dizzying CG stuffs. Failure of THE LEGEND OF ZU has contributed to the cancellation of BOOK SWORD LOVE HATE over a year ago. However no one has been cast yet and shooting will start this fall.
