For Zhang Yimou's Next Film - Zhang Ziyi Hired And MiramAxe Fired (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

May 29, 2003

Zhang Yimou Zhang Ziyi

According to Beijing Times, producer of HERO Zhang Weijing, said filming of Zhang Yimou's next martial-art film, originally scheduled for next month, had been pushed back for at least two months due to the SARS factor. He said Zhang Ziyi was definitely in but no one else, including Andy Lau, had signed up. Zhang Yimou and his writing team are still working on the script. According to another paper, Shenyang Today, the budget of this untitled project will at lease match the level of HERO, which is US$31 million. He said several Hollywood studios had contact them for distributing the film in North American and other regions. Angered by MiramAxe's doing-nothing strategy for handling HERO, he has positively ruled out MiramAxe as the potential distributor.

Plot Of Jet Li's LABOR DAY (Variety)

May 29, 2003

LABOR DAY

According to Variety, here is the story of Jet Li's LABOR DAY:

An ambitious assistant DA gets the career-making job of prosecuting the son of an elusive crime lord. When the DA's pregnant wife is taken hostage by the crime lord, the prosecutor asks for help from his wife's ex-boyfriend, a Chinese gangster (Li). This is risky not only because the DA's new ally is on the wrong side of the law, but also because the gangster still loves the wife and thinks that saving her life might help win her back.

I say: it's just sound so familiar.

Stephen Chow's KUNG FU Got Another Working Tile - MASTER! I SEE ANOTHER MASTER (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

May 27, 2003

Jiefang Daily reports both names are kept as the project's working titles for now. Stephen Chow just finished his six-day trip to Shanghai. According to the paper, Stephen Chow visited several locations in Shanghai, including the Shanghai Film Studio backlot in the town of Chedun, which has hosted many film and TV productions including PURPLE BUTTERFLY, MO LI HUA KAI (JASMINES BLOOM) and MiramAxe production THE GREAT RAID. City scenes of the old Shanghai has been recreated on the backlot, which will be used to double Hong Kong from the 1950's. While in Shanghai, Stephen Chow also met Sammo Hung, the film's action director. Stephen Chow's assistant Tin Kai-man, told the paper the film will be "absolutely different from SHAOLIN SOCCER" but he refused to say any further. Tin played Iron Jacket in SHAOLIN SOCCER and will take another small role this time. Chinese director Feng Xiaogang (BIG SHOT'S FUNERAL), who worked together in an iced tea commercial, may take one or more than one cameos in the film. Zhao Wei, Mui the steamed bun cook from SHAOLIN SOCCER may also return, but not as the female lead and Stephen Chow has yet decide who should be the female lead. Stephen Chow will fly back to Shanghai next week.

Set in the 1950's Hong Kong and a few other places in the mainland China, Stephen Chow is playing some nobody who is dreaming about becoming a kung fu master. He travels around, meets many masters, and eventually becomes a master of his own.

MiramAxe has announced a wide released of a chopped and disfigured SHAOLIN SOCCER in North America on August 8, 2003, two years after the film's initial release in Asia.

Three PURPLE BUTTERFLY Reviews (Le Monde / Libération / Variety)
May 25, 2002

(Here illustrated with wonder dead ends of a cinema which, fascinating like postulate impossibility of telling universal stories according to regulations' of a great lyric form, tries to acclimatize those to a stylized vision, "smart", which would have made its mourning of the traditional images while trying to preserve their capacity of emotion.)

Jean-François Rauger
Le Monde

C'est la part réussie du film. Sa façon de nimber fatalité et destin dans une nuée d'incertitudes où tout pourrait arriver : la duplicité de nos deux héros mais aussi leur résurrection impromptue.

(It is the successful share of film. Its way of number fate and destiny in a cloud of uncertainties where all could arrive: the duplicity of our two heroes but also their resurrection impromptu.)

Par Gérard Lefort

Libération

(Personally Remark:

I do not believe the film is in any way related to The Blue Lotus  from The Adventures of Tintin Series.)

Chinese helmer Lou Ye's "Purple Butterfly" third feature is a confusing narrative. Pic is an often remarkable, often infuriating lateral spin on genre material that desperately needs another sesh at the editing table. Rushed to compete at the Cannes fest, film looks to split crix down the middle....

WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH Will Get DVD Release First? (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

Another shot from the film.

(Changjing Daily)

According to Changjiang Daily, the film will be released in DVD and VCD as early as July, and theatrical  released has been aimed at September and October. In China, video distribution of a film is often handled by a separate company. Threatened by bootlegging, video released usually occur as early as only one week after being released in theaters. To fight piracy, TV productions are often released on video first and then  aired on TV later, a practice video producers have been trying to adopt for distributing movies. As the result of such cannibalization, tension between film industry and video industry has been growing. In January, bootlegged DVD and VCD of Chinese film HERO were released by one of its official video distributors, but were removed from the market by the authority. Financed by Columbia Pictures, Huayi Bros. Taihe and Xi'an Film Studios, WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH was shot almost two years ago but the release date have been pushed back again and again.

DIE HARD Director To Helm MURDER IN CANTON (ScreenDaily.com)
May 23, 2002

MURDER IN CANTON

According to Screen Daily, John McTiernan (BASIC, DIE HARD 3, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, DIE HARD, PREDATOR) is set to helm MURDER IN CANTON*, a US$45 million action based on mystery novel series Judge Dee, by Dutch diplomat Robert Van Gulik. The project is pushed by Samuel and Victor Hadida's Davis Films, Peter Loehr's Ming Productions and Francoise DeDeu's D+ Productions, with backing from TF1. Hadida said "the basic story is a murder mystery but with adventure, fantasy, romance and martial arts." "Production is scheduled to start by the end of the year in New Zealand and China. The character of Judge Dee will be played by a Chinese actor with a Westerner as his sidekick."

The real "Judge Dee" (Chinese name: Di Renjie), lived in the 7th Century of China's Tang Dynasty. In nearly half centuries, he took various government positions, including president of the Supreme Court and Prime Minister. Di Renjie was known for his talent of solving cases and fighting corruptions. A novel about Di Renjie was written in the late 19th by an anonymous. Robert Van Gulik tried to translate the novel to Dutch (?) but later gave up and after WWII, he start writing his own novel - Judge Dee.

* "Canton" is the old way of translating the name of the city Guangzhou.

Ang Lee Turns Universal Execs HULK Green? (Moviehole)

May 21, 2003

SFGate.com

According to Moviehole, "a test screening went down about as well as William Shatner's first LP" and "execs at Universal are turning green this week after a not so incredible screening of HULK." Apparently, Ang Lee "has turned in a melodramatic take on the comic book with an emphasis on drama - as in, really long and boring."

Drama is something Ang Lee has always been doing and he delivers what he has promised. Universal got the wrong people for the test screening.

"I would like to think that the fans, as loud and earnest as they can be, I hope they make up, like, 0.1 percent of the audience," Ang Lee told San Francisco Chronicle, "I wanted to embrace (the comic), but I also wanted to feel free to create my episode of the Hulk. If I got opinions from other places, I would be very distracted."

Jackie Chan Arrives In Cannes For AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS (Variety)

May 19, 2003

Jackie Chan, Cecile de France and Steve Coogan in Cannes  (AP)

According to Variety, 80 DAYS has been sold in more than 30 territories and "with Spain and Italy the only unsold major markets outside the U.S., foreign sales have kicked in more than 55% of the budget". With a budget of US$110 million, 80 DAYS is probably "the most expensive movie ever to be produced without a US distrib." The film is backed by Walden Media, controlled by Denver-based billionaire Philip Anschutz. In January, Paramount "broke off talks to serve as the partner on "Eighty Days" in the U.S. and a number of foreign territories". "Sources say the sticking points were budget and cast. Walden has a first-look deal with Disney, but "Eighty Days," which has been in development at the company for a few years, was never included in the deal." "Sources close to the pic say there's strong interest from U.S. majors, but studios have been waiting for footage."

SILVER HAWK - Under Production In Shanghai

According to Hong Kong media, several promotional stills and promo sheet have been shown yesterday. In this new action, formerly known as MASKED CRUSADER, Michelle Yeoh plays a superhero type of character known as "Silver Hawk". According to the Creative and Marketing Manager of Han Entertainment, the new title

Rickie Jen

was adapted to better reflect the Chinese title and the overall storyline. Production in Beijing, including the scene in which Michelle Yeoh flying over The Great Wall on a motorcycle in person, has wrapped up few weeks ago. Shooting is now under way in Shanghai. I guess the city's new skyscrapers are perfect for shooting the futuristic flick. Michelle Yeoh's silver-color three-piece suit is very uncomfortable to wear because it makes her sweat a lot, especially when she has to do the actions. A simultaneous release in the mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Southeast Asian countries has been aimed at the coming Christmas.

Chow Yun-Fat has officially agreed to take the leading role (General Li ?) of HUA MU LAN with Michelle Yeoh as the legendary Chinese heroine, producer Thomas Chung, who are promoting these three projects in Cannes, told Hong Kong newspapers. He will probably collect US$15 million for his appearance. The team also includes Peter Pau (director / cinematographer), Tim Yip (art director / costume designer) and Wang Hui-Ling (screenwriter), all involved in the production of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. The action director is Corey Yuen, who have been working with Jet Li for many years. Shooting may start in August.

Yuen Wo-Ping Talks About THE MATRIX Sequels Again (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
May 12, 2002

"Structure of the script is vast, the action scenes are in very large number, and design of everything is very new. This will definitely be a monumental breakthrough for big scenes," Hong Kong master action director Yuen Wo-Ping told Shenyang Today.

Yuen Wo-Ping said the sequels are harder to make than the first one. "There is a scene in which Neo is fighting with 100 duplicates of Agent Smith. Just for this scene, I had to come out 100 different moves." He indicated this scene is the breakthrough to the first MATRIX, "it's just like a foreigner (Keanu Reeves) fighting with 100 Arhats* of Shaolin Monastery." "The moves were choreographed completely based on the script and character of the actors. They look very nature."

"I communicated with Wachowski brothers very well", said Yuen Wo-Ping, "they gave me lots of freedom, but most of the time, I choreographed according to their demand."

"Keanu Reeves' skill has improved a lot. He worked hard and learned with his mind. I gave him a 85 out of 100. To be a top action star, Keanu Reeves is qualified." Yuen Wo-Ping even joked, "He can even fight Jet Li."

Yuen Wo-Ping said Carrie-Anne Moss was very hard to train, "each fight scene she got involved was very difficult (to do), because she is a girl and the fights have to look beautiful and perfect. But the twins are the most difficult to train, because they had so many fight scenes and used so many small-sized weapons.

"When (we are) making action movies in Asia, training is necessary for most actors, and even someone needs training, it would only last half to one month. But for actors from the west, training would last at least 4 to 5 months, because they were lacking basic training and had to start from scratch."

Yuen Wo-Ping said there was no difference between the early Hong Kong action films and today's CG enhanced action films, "the only difference is the genre. (Even though we) are doing special effects, I just blend the action into it. I think each action film should have something new, should have a new pressure (on me), and should have a new concept."

Yuen Wo-Ping said there were many factors contributed to the success of THE MATRIX, "the directors handle it well, the packaging is good, the action is great, and the genre is new."

He said his hobbies are just same as those of everyone else, "traveling, window shopping, reading novels, but I don't watch kung-fu movies."

Jackie Chan Starts Running In The Streets Of Berlin, Trying To Go AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS (AFP)

May 8, 2003

Photo: AFP/DDP/File/Johannes Eisele

News agency AFP has given us the first glance of the production of Jackie Chan's newest action. London's Bank of England and Trafalgar Square's lions are recreated at the Gendarmenmarkt, one of Berlin's most historic squares. "The German Church, or Deutscher Dom, has been given a neo-baroque face-lift and a golden lion has also been added for the film." Jackie Chan, chased by cops, jumped onto a sofa just about being lifted into a building, Jackie Chan fell to the ground along with the sofa, then he stood up and run away. Co-producer Bill Badalato said, "We were able to gather together in Berlin most of the cities we need for the shoot." Later the production will shift to a small town called Goerlitz in eastern Germany. With over US$100 million budget, this project is not only the most expensive foreign production in Germany but also the most expensive Jackie Chan film.

More On Johnny To's LONG CHENG JIAN BA - History Of Hong Kong's Crime Families (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

May 8, 2003

LONG CHENG JIAN BA

According to Nanfang Daily, LONG CHENG JIAN BA is a HK$150 million (US$20 million) six-hour trilogy about several fictional Hong Kong crime families. The story starts right after WWII and ends by 1983, in which the Hong Kong anti-organized crime unit was disbanded. Part one of the trilogy tells how Andy Lau's character grips the power step-by-step; part two tells how he guides his son, played by Louis Koo, the story of part three is undetermined. Director Johnny To said, "LONG CHENG JIAN BA has been in planning for many years but without any chance of actually launching it. Because the project has so many actors and such high budget, plus a story touches the subjects of politics and the gangs, we have to be very careful on the script." The budget is unusually high for a Hong Kong production, therefore a foreign studio might be brought in as partner. Eight years ago, Chow Yun-Fat and Andy Lau were picked to play the father and the son, but the project was not launched right way and soon after Chow Yun-Fat started his gold rush in Hollywood. Director and screenwriter Wai Ka-Fai is still working on the script and shooting has been scheduled for next year. Johnny To and Wai Ka-Fai were directorial partners of films like MY LEFT EYE SEES GHOSTS, FULLTIME KILLER, and LOVE ON A DIET. Wai Ka-Fai also directed TOO MANY WAYS TO BE NO. 1 alone.

Two Jackie Chan's Projects - TITANIUM RAIN Renamed TIME BREAKER And SHEN XUAN QI BING Postponed

According to Reuters TV, Jackie Chan’s upcoming action flick TITANIUM RAIN has been renamed TIME BREAKER and is under major plot change. “While the original concept of TITANIUM RAIN was of a Chinese warrior who travels through time to modern-day America, Chan will play an intrepid adventurer a la Indiana Jones who gets transported back to a previous life when he goes after a valuable treasure.” John Chong, the general manager of Media Asia Films, said "the new concept will have a lot more Chinese cultural aspects and beliefs in it, such as the belief that our past, present and future lives are somewhat linked." Media Asia is looking for both international and Chinese partners on the US$40 million project. Shooting is expected to begin in August in the cities of Xi’an, Kunming and Beijing. But giving the circumstance of the SARS fear factor, I really doubt about the production will go as planned.

According to Hong Kong’s Oriental Daily, Hong Kong studio Mandarin Films, has pushed the production of SHEN BING XUAN QI from August to December, due to the SARS fear, of course. SHEN BING XUAN QI (literal title: DIVINE SOLDIERS) is based on the same name comic book series created by Hong Kong comic artist Wong Yuk-Long’s King Comics. The story starts like this: Goddess Nü Wa created a sacred weapon called Tian Jing (Heaven Crystal) to defeat the devil force. Millions years later, an unearthed evil weapon Hu Po (Tiger Soul) is about to bring chaos to the earth, and a young man named Wen Tian starts searching for Tian Jing, the only weapon capable of matching the power of Hu Po. In the film version, Nicolas Tse will take the role of Wen Tian and Jackie Chan will cameo as his father. At least one US studio is interested in partnering the project and the budget may soar over US$10 million. However Jackie Chan’s schedule is very tight and he may not have time for the shooting in December.
