HERO News 315 - HERO Tops North American Box Office, Breaking Several Records For Foreign Films

(MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

August 30, 2004

Chinese movie Hero dominated the weekend box officer with estimated US$17.8 million revenue, according to studio estimates. Over the weekend, Hero was distributed in 2,031 theaters across North America, easily became the widest Asian release of all time, a recorded previously held by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with 2,027 theaters. In addition, Hero knocked out Bring It On (US$17.4 million) as the biggest end of August opening ever and landed on the second place of best foreign language début behind The Passion Of The Christ, a US production featuring a practically extinct "foreign language" called Latin. It collected an estimated US$6.7 million on Friday (another record for Asian productions), US$6.6 million on Saturday and US$4.5 million on Sunday according to MiramAxe's estimation. The record for all-time top growing foreign language film in North America is held by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with US$128.07 million.

Two years ago, MiramAxe paid a reportedly US$21 million for distributing Hero in North and South America, some European countries, Australia, New Zealand and Africa. Later when the film was released in east and southeast Asia, MiramAxe broke the promise of releasing it in North America by the end of December of that year, reportedly the Weinstein brothers was concerned that a few of their own productions, like Chicago and Gangs Of New York, might be overshadowed during the Oscar race. Even after Hero received an Oscar nomination for The Best Foreign Language Film, MiramAxe still refused to carry out any promotion. During the following one and a half years, afraid of not getting their 21 mills back, MiramAxe pushed the released day for at least five times. After MiramAxe's parent company Disney, who has fast-growing business interest in China, stepped in and Quentin Tarantino attached his name to the film, which somewhat eased the Weinstein brothers' concern, MiramAxe finally picked a day August 27.

Jackie Chan And Leung Ka-Fai Did THE MYTH With Terra-Cotta Army (G-Film)

August 28, 2004

(Sing Pao Daily)

(Sina.com)

Yesterday Jackie Chan and Leung Ka-Fai arrived at Xi'an's The First Emperor's Terra-Cotta Soldiers and Horses Museum to shoot a few scenes for The Myth. According to Hong Kong paper Sing Pao Daily, they played two archeologists, who were arguing about something inside pit 1 of the museum. The museum was built on a series of pits, where thousands of terra-cotta figures have been unearthed and thousands more are still waiting for excavation. The burial pits are part of the China's First Emperor's mausoleum. The filming only lasted for less than a day and it involved no actions. Jackie Chan has finished the shooting in Shanghai and Wuxi. His next destination is Gansu Province and then he will go to India.

Top-Ten List Revisited:

February 2002, a Variety article broke the news that MiramAxe picked up the rights to Hero for the English speaking countries. To unleash my anger, I quickly wrote a Top-Ten list. Now, two and a half years later, when MiramAxe is finally releasing the film in the US and Canada, let's us take another look at the list to see how accurate my "prediction" was:

10.  Promote it as "from the people made Crouching Tiger"

In the trailer, MiramAxe wrote the film was "FROM THE PRODUCER OF CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON."

9.    Push the release date back until DVDs from Asia are everywhere

MiramAxe promised to release it in November 2002, and during the following two years, it pushed the date back at least five times. Now, DVDs from Asia are indeed everywhere, despite MiramAxe's effort of wiping them out.

8.    Dub it with some Cantonese accent sound-like

One of many practices by MiramAxe and it has been tried on Shaolin Soccer.

7.    Replace the original score with some kung-fu music sound-like

It was also tried on Shaolin Soccer.

6.    Replace the kung-fu music sound-like with some rap

It was also also tried on Shaolin Soccer.

5.    Cut scenes to make it an hour and half long

MiramAxe forced director Zhang Yimou to cut the film into 1 hour and 38 minute long.

4.    Cut fighting scenes to get a PG-13

It got a PG-13 rating and some fighting scene was cut. Not sure they were related or not.

3.    Cut dramatic scenes to "reduce boringness"

The cut also includes dramatic scenes.

2.    Change the title to "Kung-fu Heroes from China"

For a while, MiramAxe was using the title "Jet Li's Hero".

1.    Go straight to video

Believe me, several months ago Hero was really on the edge of going straight to video. Then Quentin Tarantino started lobbying the Weinstein brothers and Disney, MiramAxe's parent company, stepped in as well. Disney is trying to push more of its movies into Chinese market and a new Disneyland is under construction in Hong Kong.

China's 24th Golden Rooster Awards Nominations (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

August 22, 2004

24th Golden Rooster Awards

Nomination list for China's 24th Golden Rooster Awards has been released yesterday. For the best picture, it is House Of Flying Daggers against Shanghai Story and Profoundly Affecting. Zhang Yimou is nominated for best director for House Of Flying Daggers, along with Peng Xiaolian for Shanghai Story. Liu Wei, for Defending Reputation, and Liu Ye, for The Foliage, are competing for the Best Actor. For the Best Actress, Zhang Ziyi is picked for playing three roles in Jasmine Women. Other nominees in the same category are Zheng Zhenyao for Shanghai Story, Tao Hong for Taekwondo and Jiang Qinqin for Jie Jie Ci Dian.

Golden Rooster has been dubbed as the top film award in China, only mainland Chinese productions and mainland Chinese citizens are eligible for the awards, and only the officially submitted are allowed to compete. Most nominated movies have never been publicly released and some titles, like Profoundly Affecting and Defending Reputation, got nominated somewhat because they were "politically superior".

Donnie Yen And Wang Xueqi Join Tsui Kark's SEVEN SWORDSMEN LEAVE MT. HEAVEN  (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

August 20, 2004

Seven Swordsmen Leave Mt. Heaven

According to Shanghai Youth, Donnie Yen and Wang Xueqi have been cast after Chinese actor Hu Jun and Korean movie and TV soap star Song Seung-Heon exited the project. Donnie Yen is one of a few Hong Kong stars who received systematic martial-art training before joining the film industry. To the international audiences, he is more known for his role in Iron Monkey. Wang Xueqi starred in director Chen Kaige's two early works, Yellow Earth and The Big Parade. Recently played Mater An in Warriors Of Heaven And Earth.

Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li and Michelle Yeoh To Star In MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, It Is Official! (Columbia Pictures)

(Han Entertainment, Ltd, Mythical Films)

A few hours ago Columbia Pictures announced that Chinese Zhang Ziyi and Japanese actor Ken Watanabe would take the leading roles in Memoirs Of A Geisha. Chinese actress Gong Li, Chinese Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh and Japanese actor Koji Yakusho and actress Youki Kudoh are in final negotiations for supporting roles.

(Thanks to **, Mark Singh and Lynne Brakeman.)

Zhang Ziyi started her career in a small TV movie called Touching Starlight while still registered at Central Drama Academy in Beijing. She was then picked by director Zhang Yimou to lead The Road Home. Her performance in Ang Lee's Couching Tiger, Hidden Dragon made her an instant star worldwide. Since then, she has taken supporting roles in a series of movies, Musa and My Wife Is A Gangster, which were both Korean productions, The Legend Of Zu, from Hong Kong, and Rush Hour 2, a Hollywood project. She then returned to martial-art genre by playing in Hero and House Of Flying Daggers, both were directed by Zhang Yimou. In between these two projects, she did Purple Butterfly, Jasmine and 2046. Her most recent film is Operetta Tanuki Goten, in which she played an ancient Japanese girls. Even more interest - the profession of the character she played in House Of Flying Daggers, later became Geisha in Japan.

Gong Li was also graduated from Central Drama Academy and also started her silver screen career with director Zhang Yimou. From 1980's to 1990's, they have worked together in Red Sorghum, Codename Cougar, A Terre Cotta Warrior, Ju Dou, Raise The Red Lanterns, Story Of Qiu Ju, Shanghai Triad and To Live. During these years, she also participated in several Hong Kong productions, which did little to help her career. After ended the working relationship with Zhang Yimou, she starred in director Chen Kaige's Farewell My Concubine, Temptress Moon and The Emperor And The Assassin. Her newest released film project is Zhou Yu's Train. She will be seen in Wong Kar-Wai's 2046 and Eros.

Born in Malaysia, Michelle Yeoh started her career in Hong Kong after graduated from a UK college. After playing in dozens of Hong Kong action features, she was discovered by international audiences when Rumble In Bronx was released worldwide. She was then cast a bond girl in Tomorrow Never Die and her appearance in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon brought her more international recognition. Recently she then produced and played in two projects, The Touch and Silver Hawk, both were not very successful.

Though Memoirs Of A Geisha is about a story takes place entirely in Japan, only half of the cast are Japanese. The other half are Chinese. Zhang, Gong and Yeoh are the most well-known Asian actress outside the Hollywood circle. Asian actress in the Hollywood, like Lucy Liu and Kelly Hu, are probably too familiar and too expensive to be considered for the project.

Directed by Rob Marshall and produced by Steven Spielberg, Memoirs Of A Geisha will go into production next month in the States and Japan. By then, everyone will have to speak English rather Japanese - it is a Hollywood production after all.

According to Chinese media, Korean actor Song Seung-Heon just quit Tsui Hark's Seven Swordsmen Leave Mt. Heaven just one month before the filming is expected to begin. Tsui Hark is now searching for the replacement. Earlier this month Chinese actor Hu Jun exited the project as well. Now the remaining cast includes Leon Lai, Charlie Yeung, Liu Chia-Hui, Lu Yi and Sun Honglei. Tsui Hark is producing a TV version of the story, which was also based on the same name novel. August 16, 2004

Battle Of

The Red Cliff

Battle of the Red Cliff was featured in Romance of Three Kingdoms, a classic epic of Chinese history during the 2nd and 3rd century. Now there are two Chinese studios pushing for their own projects based on the same section of the same novel. Asian Union Film and Media (Poly Huayi Media) has teamed up with John Woo and his Lion Rock Picture to depict the story on the big screen. Some rumor suggests Chow Yun-Fat has been cast. Earlier this year Shanghai Film Studios announced its own project of Battle Of The Red Cliff, without mentioning any detail on the cast and crew. Both projects are attached with a budget big enough for building a medium-size power plant and neither studio is backing up.

MiramAxe backstabbed This Site (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

August 14, 2004

Site Blackout

Many of you have discovered that this site was down yesterday and when it was finally restored today, purchasing Hero discs through the site have been disabled. This is not an accident, but the direct result of MiramAxe's legal action.

Some days ago, the ISP of this site was contacted by MiramAxe who demanded selling of Hero products through the site to be terminated immediately, or a law suit would follow. The ISP then disabled the IP address of this site and would not restore it unless Hero products are removed.

MiramAxe and/or its legal representative has never contacted me concerning this matter but rather forced the ISP to backstab this site. Furthermore, MiramAxe does not own all rights to Hero in all countries. It only owns the distribution rights to the film itself in North America, Latin America, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South African, the rest of Africa and Italy.

Despite the fact that all products were sold from China directly, not from any of the above countries, to bring the site back as soon as possible, I have suspended selling Hero discs through the site.

There are something you might want to know: this site has been continuously promoting Hero for over three years without any support from MiramAxe, even though MiramAxe has being motivating many other sites to do the promotion.

John Woo Made BATTLE OF THE RED CLIFF Deal With Chinese Studio (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

August 11, 2004

(About.com)

According to Beijing based newspaper Star Daily, John Woo's Lion Rock Picture has sign a deal with Chinese studio Poly Huayi Media over jointly producing Battle Of The Red Cliff, based on part of classic Chinese novel Romance Of The Three Kingdom. President of Poly Huayi Media, Dong Ping said budget of the project was no less than 300 million yuans (US$ 36 million) which would be the most expensive film ever produced by Chinese film industry. Reportedly, John Woo has been working on the adaptation for decades and only reached the deal with Poly Huayi Media very recently. Romance Of the Three Kingdoms is a 14th / 15th Century fiction based on China's history from the 2nd to the 3rd Century, during which, the Han Dynasty split into three empires and then reunited under Jin, a new region. Battle Of The Red Cliff will feature Cao Cao from the north commanding an army of nearly one million to attack two other warlords Liu Bei and Sun Quan down the south and after a series of dramatic events, Cao was finally defeated at the Red Cliff.

In a letter to Poly Huayi Media, John Woo wrote the story of "Battle of the Red Cliff" was in gigantic scale with multiple layers of elements. It featured characters with distinctive personalities and battles conducted with brilliant strategies. He said the film would not be a martial-art feature, but rather an moving story at epical scale.

According to Dong Ping, filming would start as early as next year. Currently, John Woo is shooting Spy Hunter with The Rock in the States. Poly Huayi Media is a half private and half state-own enterprise, which just opened for business last December.

In MiramAxe's newest design, Jet Li's right hand was rotated about 90 degrees counter-clockwise and his new weapon was a curved blade sword invented about two millenniums after the time period featured in the film. Furthermore, Jet Li's hair was cut, arm was chopped and jacket was dyed brown. khaki Where did Jet Li's sword go? Just take a look at what Leung Chiu-Wai was holding (far-left).
