Here is a description of the story, summarized from the official Chinese and English synopsis:
In the early 1600, the long ruling Ming Dynasty has been overthrown, and the Manchurian invaders from the northeast have taken over the sovereignty of China, beginning what is known as the Qing (Ching) Dynasty. To crack down the rebellions, Prince Duogeduo imposes a ruthless emergency martial law, ordering all martial art practitioners to turn in their weapons to district officials. Those who fail to do so will be considered committing a serious crime and would result to immediate execution. But soon enough, people would discover that even if they were to obey the law and turn in their weapons, their fate is equally in dire. Wind Fire (Sun Honglei), a surrendered military official from the previous dynasty, sees this as an opportunity to make a fortune for himself by helping to execute the new law. After endless massacres, Wind Fire's next goal is to attack the final frontier, the village of Bowei Fortress, the base of a branch of the Society of Heaven and Earth, which is secretly planning to restore the Ming regime.
Fu Qingzhu (Liu Chia-Liang), a retired executioner from the Ming and a medical doctor, realizes their only hope is to seek help from Mt. Heaven and two young warriors from the village, Wu Yuanying (Charlie Yeung) and Han Zhibang (Lu Yi), accompany him along journey to the icy mountains, the residence of Shadow-Glow (?), a hermit and a master sword maker, and his disciples of great swordsmanship.
Spoiler alert! Highlight to read.
Master Shadow-Glow agrees to help and orders four of his best disciples, Chu Zhaonan (Donnie Yen), Yang Yuncong (Leon Lai), Mu Lang (Zhou Qunda) and Xin Longzi (Dai Li-Wu) to go. Chu Zhaonan, with a precious sword from his master, is eager to have some accomplishment in the outside world. Yang Yuncong, on the other hand, very much enjoys being a hermit but after he rescued Wu Yuanying from an avalanche, his life is about to change forever. The Seven Swords, Fu Qingzhu, Wu Yuanying, Han Zhibang, Chu Zhaonan, Yang Yuncong, Mu Lang, and Xin Longzi, carrying seven swords given by Master Shadow-Glow, set out to save the people of Bowei Fortress. As they take the entire village leading them to the road of a safer place, they begin to encounter mysterious confusion. Food and water is poisoned, and trails of escape are marked with signs leading the enemy to them. They soon realize that someone among them is working for the Qing, and The Seven Swords must identify the mole before Wind Fire's army gets to them...
Seven Swords is based on xuxia novel Seven Swords Leave Mt. Heaven by Liang Yu-Sheng. It is not related to Seven Samurais.
