A young couple from a small town migrate to Beijing to work at a theme park with scaled models of man-made wonders from around the world. The film explored the impact of urbanization and globalization on China's traditional culture. For years, director Jia Zhangke, a member of China's Sixth Generation directors, was making underground films, like Xiao Wu, Zhantai, In Public, In Person and Unknown Pleasures. The World is Jia's first film fully approved by the censorship of China. It is produced by the state-run Shanghai Film Studios.

March 27, 2005 |
The cast list for A SAO, a new gang related Hong Kong title, was released earlier this week. 23 year old Taiwanese girl Annie Liu was picked to take the title role as "A Sao" the eight gangsters will be played by Leung Ka-Fai (Three...Extremes, Throw Down), Simon Yam (PTU, Fulltime Killer), Alex Fong (One Nite in Mongkok, The Storm Riders), Anthony Wong (House of Fury, Infernal Affairs trilogy), Eric Tsang (Jiang Hu, Infernal Affairs trilogy), Chen Sung-Yung (Fong Shi Yu, City of Sadness), Ko Chun-Hsiung (Island of Fire, 800 Heros), Liu Ye (The Foliage, Purple Butterfly). "A Sao" is a form of address to the big brother's wife, who is sometimes as powerful as the big brother. A Sao is the third project for director Wong Ching-Po. Wong said the movie would be very romantic, the tone would be "pinky-blues" and it would show the innocence of a young woman in a corrupted world. Reportedly this movie may not be released in the mainland China, just like Wong's last movie Jiang Hu, because the Chinese Film Bureau never had good taste for the subject of gangs. Shooting will start soon and the release has been aimed at August this year.

Looks like Jackie Chan is really getting tired of playing Mr. Nice Guy over and over again. He just told Hong Kong media that he was planning a movie in which he would play a real baddie.
Spoiler Alert! Highlight to read:
He even designed three scenes to show how evil his character would be: pulling a little girl by her hair and smashing her against a piece of glass; putting a gun into an old man's mouth; and burning a baby's arms and legs with a cigarette.

Rumors: CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON Prequel to Be Made This Summer and Jackie Chan Might Play Genghis Khan in TEMUJIN: BATTLE OF THE SEVEN WINGS (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive) |
March 17, 2005 |
Personally, I seriously doubt the authenticity of the news, but just in case I'm wrong: According to an article posted on Chinese newspaper Yunnan Information, Ang Lee will start making a prequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon this summer in Yunnan Province of southwestern China. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was based on part four of Crane-Iron Pentalogy. The prequel is about the story of young Li Mu Bai and young Yui Hsui Lien, played by Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. (More about Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon)
The same article also claimed two other projects would also be filmed in the province - Temujin: Battle of the Seven Wings (literal title) and Shan Nü (literal title: Mountain Woman). Temujin: Battle of the Seven Wings is about Mongol tribal chief Temujin's seven day battle against Tartar nation in revenge for the death of his father. Temujin later became Genghis Khan after he unified all Mongols. Director Stanley Tong is lobbying Jackie Chan to play Temujin and Chen Daomin from Hero is also mentioned as a candidate for the role. The cast also includes Chen Hao, Wang Gang, Chen Gangwu and several Shaolin monks and national martial-art champions. Shooting will begin in May or June on three grasslands of Yunnan Province.
Shan Nü will follow the story of a woman called Shan Nü, who raised an abandoned Japanese girl by the end of World War II and the girl later became a great musician. Shan Nü is played by Dongfang Wenying and Chen Gangwu portraies an old musician.

Cinematographer turned director Gu Changwei just told Chinese paper Nanjing Morning Post that he was getting ready to make a sequel to his Kong Que (Peacock), a recent Silver Berlin Bear winner. Peacock (Kong Que) is a light humorous family drama, focusing on a sister and two brothers' story of pursuing individual freedom from late 1970s to early 1980s China. Wong Kar-Wai's THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI is a Remake of Orson Welles Classic? (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive) |
March 8, 2005 |
According an article from Shanghai Morning Post, Wong Kar-Wai's upcoming project with Nicole Kidman, The Lady from Shanghai, was indeed a remake of the same title classic by Orson Welles (click here). Well, I'm not quite sure about this one.
The article also says the film will not be shot in Shanghai, even though its title bears the city's name. Instead, the filming will take place in Harbin of the northeastern China, New York and St. Petersburg. Harbin was famous for its rich collection of Russian-influenced architecture. It was also reported that Wong's long-time partner cinematographer Christopher Doyle is not involved in the production. Wong has said the filming will start in June and he has promised to wrap it up within three months.
