SUMMER PALACE Rejected by Chinese Censors Again (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

July 30, 2006

(Laurel Films)

Chinese film Summer Palace was rejected by Chinese authority again, according to Life Nanjing, a newspaper owned by the state-run Xinhua News Agency. Summer Palace producer Nai An told the paper that they were ready to resubmit the film for censorship again but they were simply told to wait for further notice because the authority "needs more time to consider." Summer Palace was selected to compete for the Golden Palm in April and its production company Laurel Films submitted it for censorship just one day before its scheduled world premiere in Cannes. The authority refused to watch the film, claiming it contains audible and and visual defects. The film was screened in Cannes in May as planned, but without a certificate from the Chinese authority. A day later, Laurel Films resubmitted another copy and rejected again. This time, the authority said only a "magnetic Beta tape transferred from celluloid" was acceptable. Summer Palace has been sold to almost twenty countries and distribution in North American, some European countries, Japan and South Korea is under negotiation.

Latest Casting Update on Olivier Assayas' BOARDING GATE (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

July 27, 2006

Carl Wu and Kelly Lin at a fashion show in Hong Kong. (?)

According to The Hong Kong Sun, the role of the contract killer in director Olivier Assayas' Boarding Gate now goes to Carl Ng (Set to Kill, New Police Story, Colour of the Truth) while Kelly Lin is still attached to play his wife. The film focuses on an Italian woman lives in London (Asia Argento), who has a passionate affair with a former financial big gun (Michael Madsen). She also had a second lover, a contract killer (Ng) who has to kill the big gun and the contract killer’s wife (Lin) is behind the scenes, pulling the strings. A long list of Hong Kong big names were previously associated with the role of the contract killer, like Leung Ka-Fai, Leung Chou-Wai (both named Tony), Andy Lau and Simon Yam.  Leung Ka-Fai is now making My Life As a Teacher (literal) in the mainland China, while Leung Chou-Wai, Andy Lau and Simon Yam are staying in Hong Kong for other projects (Leung Chou-Wai for Confession of Pain, Andy Lau for Protégé and Simon Yam for The Iron Triangle). As for the role of the the contract killer's wife, Michelle Yeoh and Maggie Q were once considered. The Hong Kong Sun reports that Ng and Lin were asked to join the cast because both of them speak fluent English. Shooting has already begun last week in France. The paper says Olivier Assayas just arrived in Hong Kong yesterday to cast more Chinese actors for a three week long filming in the city starting next month.

MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS Production Update (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

July 25, 2006

(China Foto Press)

Mighty Ganesha from NYC just sent me another little update on the production of Wong Kar-Wai's My Blueberry Nights. A full month has passed by since our last update and the shooting is still at the same spot.

Hey Fab Monkey Peaches,

I wanted to drop a note to tell you that the Wong Kar-Wai film, My Blueberry Nights, has been filming again in Soho since last Thursday, and was still there as of yesterday (Monday), which is longer than they were filming originally. They are at the same spot that was pictured in earlier reports. The art department once again turned the restaurant that is there into a bakery, and I saw some prop lampposts. I did see someone who appeared to be Jude Law's stand-in.

I wasn't able to actually see the scene set up and shot. Perhaps they are doing reshoots and are filming at night?

As ever, thanks for the site,

Mighty Ganesha

CONFESSION OF PAIN Official Plot Description (Media Asia)

July 25, 2006

(Media Asia)

The official website of Hong Kong studio Media Asia has been updated with an official plot description of Confession of Pain, created by the Infernal Affairs trilogy writing/directing team.  The cast includes Leung Chiu-Wai Takeshi Kaneshiro, Shu Qi, Xu Jinglei and Chapman To. This should end the plot mystery surrounding the thriller once for all.

Caution! This description might be spoiling. Just highlight the following to read:

In a city of love and prosperity, a city of lost hope and premature death, veteran detective Hei (TONY LEUNG CHIU-WAI) feels it all: the hurt, the helplessness, the horror. When his father-in-law, the billionaire benefactor Kim, is gruesomely murdered in his palatial mansion, he enlists the assistance of his former partner turned private detective, Bong (TAKESHI KANESHIRO).

On the surface, the murder smacks of a vendetta that has taken a lifetime to fulfill. But no sooner has Bong agreed to crack the case with Hei than he realizes nothing is what it appears to be. Undoubtedly, they are after a monster in a perfect crime: every detail was meticulously orchestrated, every motive conveniently justifiable, and every culprit and potential witness mysteriously eliminated.

But Bong has his own demon to fight. Ever since the suicide of his pregnant girlfriend, he has lost his joie de vivre, even though he still retains the finest instincts of a man hunter. As he digs deeper and deeper into the case, all evidence seems to point to Kim’s daughter and Hei’s hysterical wife, Susan. But then the killer ups the ante by murdering Susan as well. Bong starts grappling with the suspicion that the man they hunt is someone very close to them, someone on the verge of a total breakdown.

Like lost souls in a city of fallen angels, the cop, the private detective, and the killer are doing what they must. Every step of their journey takes them closer and closer to one another, until a shocking denouement in which no stone is left unturned and no one can escape unscathed.

Bruce Lee's four brothers and sisters have been talking to the press around the world that they would make a Bruce Lee biopic. It will be based on a new biography by his younger brother Robert and Beijing-based JA Media has been authorized to carry out the project. Stephen Chow and Keanu Reeves' names have been mentioned for playing the title role but the chance of anyone of them getting cast looks slim. There have been two Bruce Lee movie biographies, made separately by filmmakers of the US and Hong Kong. China's CCTV has also planned to make a 40 episode TV series title The Legend of Bruce Lee.

The original articles all state that Jet Li has officially joined the project as the lead. Some rumor says Jackie Chan might also land a role in the movie but of cause, it is just a rumor. Yuen Wo-Ping and screenwriter Zou Jingzhi is now working on the script, which is still just a rough storyline. The movie is talking about defending homeland and fighting the nomadic invaders, but according to producers of the movie, the real idea is about keeping peace.

Casting Choice for Ang Lee's LUST, CAUTION Announced (Focus Features)

July 18, 2006

Tang

Wei

Leung

Chiu-Wai

Wang

Lee-Hom

(Block 2 Pictures / Sina.com.cn.)

Just a few hours ago, Focus Features has official announced the names of three major cast members of Ang Lee's Lust, Caution through a press release article. Not surprisingly, they are Tang Wei (last name: Tang), Tony Leung Chiu-Wai (last name: Leung) and Wang Lee-Hom (last name: Wang). Based on the same name short story by late woman writer Eileen Chang, the story of Lust, Caution is set in the Japanese occupied Shanghai in the 1940s (more precisely, sometime between 1941 and 1945). Leung will play Mr. Yee (Yi), a powerful political figure within the Japanese-controlled puppet government and Tang will play Wang Jiazhi,  a young woman assigned to approach Yee and to lead him into an assassination trap. Wang Lee-Hom will play Kuang Yu-Min, a young student involved with Wang Jiazhi.

27 year old Tang Wei was born in Beijing and was graduated from China's Central Drama College (aka. Central Theater College). Basically unknown, even in her homeland, her career as an actress is only limited to several TV series and stage productions. She will make her big-screen début with Lust, Caution. 44 year old Leung Chiu-Wai is already one of the top Chinese movie stars. Has starred in more than 70 movies and TV series, his most noticeable achievement includes six films by Wang Kar-Wai, Days of Being Wild, Chungking Express, Ashes of Time, Happy Together, In the Mood for Love and 2046. In recent years, he also starred in the Infernal Affairs trilogy and Zhang Yimou's Hero. He is currently working with Infernal Affairs' writing/directing team in new thriller Confession of Pain. Wang Lee-Hom was born in Rochester, New York in 1976. Best known as a pop singer and songwriter, Wang has also starred in several Taiwanese-made movies and TV series.

Shooting is scheduled to begin this fall in Shanghai and Hong Kong. Lust , Caution will be the first Ang Lee's film shot in China since Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Update on the Tsui / Lam / To Jigsaw Project, THE IRON TRIANGLE (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

July 13, 2006

Tsui Hark Ringo Lam Johnnie To

(?)

Shooting of the Johnny To, Ringo Lam and Tsui Hark project, working-titled The Iron Triangle (literal), will begin in Hong Kong by the end of this month, Yu Dong, president of Beijing-based Polybona Films, told newspaper The Beijing News. Tsui Hark will begin to shoot the first one third of the movie first. According to Yu, the story begins like this: a few guys with little money and a lot to worry about gather together to chat about how to get rich. Then a mysterious man sitting in the same room approaches them with a treasure map. However, to get their hand on the treasure, the map is only the first of a series puzzles they have to solve. This is only the beginning of Tsui Hark's part, Ringo Lam has to look at the development of the story, and Johnnie To has to complete it. Three directors are solely responsible for their own parts, but Yu has assured that, when three parts are pieced together, the final film will be presented with one unified style, because three directors have known each other for many years. Currently the cast includes Simon Yam, Louis Koo, Kelly Lin and Sun Honglei.

Small Update on Yuen Wo-Ping's THE GREAT WALL (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

July 12, 2006

Jet Li and Yuen Wo-Ping on the set of Fearless. (?)

A few days ago, a group of The Great Wall researchers and historians were invited to a forum to contribute their ideas on the upcoming historical epic The Great Wall (Chinese literal title). Screenwriter Zou Jingzhi (The Battle of Red Cliff, Wu Qingyuan, Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles), actress Fan Bingbing (Battle of Wits, A Chinese Tall Story, Cell Phone) and composer Liu Huan participated in the discussion. We still do not know what the movie will tell, except it will be set in the Qin Dynasty (221 - 206 B.C.) and / or Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - 220 A.D.) and it will be related to The Great Wall. Also, Jet Li has yet agreed to join the project but Yuen Wo-Ping maintains his confidence that Li will say yes. Zou Jingzhi will finish the script by October and shooting of this US$38 million project will begin by the first half of 2007.

Andy Lau as a Drug Lord in PROTÉGÉ (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

July 12, 2006

Andy Lau with his "family." (OriSun.com)

Hong Kong's sister newspapers Oriental Daily and The Sun have captured the first shots of Andy Lau playing a drug lord in Protégé (another report claims he plays a cop associated with the drug gang). Directed by Yee Tung-Shing and produced by Peter Chan, Protégé covers the entire life-cycle of drugs with multiple storylines running in parallel. The cast also includes Daniel Wu (an undercover cop), Louis Koo (role unknown), Zhang Jingchu (a drug-addicted nightclub girl having an affair with Daniel Wu) and Anita Yuen (Lau's wife).

Please do not confuse Protégé with Confession of Pain (Chinese literal title: The Wounded City), another good cop / bad cop thriller currently being shot in Hong Kong. Directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, Confession of Pain stars Leung Chiu-Wai (a bad cop), Takeshi Kaneshiro (a private detective / ex-cop), Xu Jinglei (Leung's new wife), Shu Qi (a woman having an unusual relationship with Kaneshiro) and Chapman To (possibly another cop).

What Chow Yun-Fat Looks Like in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 3 (...)

(?, Wherestherum.com)

Two shots, one from an unidentified Hong Kong newspaper and the other one from Wherestherum.com. (Thanks to Mighty Ganesha and ChowYunFat.info.)

In a related news, the second Pirates of the Caribbean just run into a stone wall in China. Reportedly, it just failed to pass the censorship review, which is a vital step for any movie to be released in Chinese theaters. The authority has concluded that the supernatural element and Capitan Davy Jones' octopus beard are not suitable for the underaged. Disney may now have to make some cut of the movie and resubmit it for a second review. Since there is no movie rating system currently exists in China, movies to be released in Chinese theaters are required to be suitable for all. However, the standard is very ambiguous and arbitrary, and often, tougher on foreign films. Just recently, Mission: Impossible 3 was greenlighted for a theatrical release in China after several shots with hanging laundry, Mahjong playing and Tom Cruise being tortured were removed. Many Chinese are very upset by the result. Someone has called on the net to boycott the re-cut version and to buy bootlegged DVD instead.

Update: according to Chinese newspaper Nanfang Metropolis Daily, the second  Pirates of the Caribbean has not been submitted for censorship.

Confession of Pain is created by the writing/directing team behind the Infernal Affairs trilogy.

Li Shaohong Wrapped up THE DOOR (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

July 8, 2006

Two poster designs (Rosat Films)

Mainland Chinese woman director Li Shaohong just wrapped up the production of her first psychological thriller Men (The Door) last Wednesday in southwestern Chinese city Chongqing. Based on short story The Three-Way Fork (literal), The Door tells how a man's paranoia destroys his love one and himself. Since the late 1980s, Li Shaohong has directed nine films, including two TV films, and three TV series. Her latest work, Stolen Life, was picked as the Best Narrative Feature at the Tribeca Film Festival last year. Unlike in the rest of Asia, like Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong, horror is a underdeveloped genre in the mainland China, much due to the state censorship. The standard for approving screen-suitable movies are too ambiguous and arbitrary to follow, and filmmakers, who want to make horror movies, have to keep the balance between pleasing the censors and appealing the audiences. However, no horror movie has ever been highly successful at the box-office of the country. Foreign made horror movies are largely not released in China legally but are available through pirate DVDs.

A fan poster. (?)

In March this year, Leung Chiu-Wai the told local press that he would work with director Andrew Lau again in a new crime drama, but he said nothing about the title and the plot. At the same time, Hong Kong's Media Asia told the foreign press, not the local press, that Andrew Lau, Alan Mak and Leung Chiu-Wai would work together again in a new project titled Behind the Sin and it would tell "a story about a detective who helps a friend investigate his father-in-law's death." Later Andrew Lau said he was working on The Wounded City (Chinese title), in which Leung Chiu-Wai would play a bad cop collaborating with a drug lord and Takeshi Kaneshiro would play a good cop to bust him. Even though the stories sound different, I believe they are actually the same movie.
