John Woo's Latest Comment on his RED CLIFF (CHI  BI) (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

March 31, 2007

The set of warlord Cao Cao's commanding center. (The Beijing News)

Earlier this week, John Woo showed up at a ceremony for contracting Beijing-based CineLabs to develop all celluloid films of the war epic. He said he was very surprised that Leung Chiu-Wai quitted the project and he respected Leung’s decision. Chang Chen is still attached and Liu Ye has not joined the cast (an earlier report said Chang Chen's role was taken by Liu Ye). He has made a few shots of a new born pony and the mother horse, which would be included in the movie. He said the number of people working in the project had reached to around 800 and the set had been built, adjacent to a reservoir in Hebei Province (near Beijing). Lin Chi-lin is learning the ancient skill of knot-making, Chow Yun-Fat is practicing his lines (will be delivered in Mandarin), and Hu Jun and Zhao Wei are preparing their fight scenes. According to The Beijing News, the set of warlord Cao Cao's commanding center, camps and trenches have almost completed. A large number of warships, siege vehicles and other props have also been built. Principal shooting will begin by earlier April and will last for about six months.

Zahng Ziyi Is Interested in the Jackie Chan / Jet Li Project (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

March 30, 2007

(Beijing New Picture Films)

Zhang Ziyi has said, recently during an interview in Beijing, that she was in talk to play a role in the untitled Jackie Chan / Jet Li project (it is called “Kings of Kung Fu” by the Chinese media). Two roles are up for grab, according to a Chinese newspaper – White Haired Demoness (a character inspired by Brigitte Lin’s role in The Bride with White Hair The Bride with White Hair) and Golden Sparrow (a character inspired by Cheng Pei-pei’s role in Golden Swallow).  Golden Sparrow is a 15 year old girl, so White Haired Deomenss would be more fitting for her. Golden Sparrow will be the girl the New York kid, Jason (Michael Angarano) meets in his dream and White Haired Demoness will be a member of Yujiang Warrior’s evil force, which tries to stop Jason and his colleagues, Lu Yan (Jackie Chan) and the Silent Monk (Jet Li), from rescuing the Monkey King (Jet Li). China born Hollywood actress Bai Ling (Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow) has also expressed her interest in joining the project. Other actress who are somehow associated with the project include Li Bingbing (A World without Thief), Liu Yifei (Love of May), Ruby Lin (Life Express) and Fann Wong (Shanghai Knights).

RED CLIFF Casting Adjustment 2 - Liu Ye Replaces Chang Chen (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

March 24, 2007

(Beijing New Picture Film Co., Sony Pictures)

According to several Chinese newspapers, Chang Chen (The Go Master, Three Times, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) has left John Woo’s The Battle of Red Cliff and his role, warlord Sun Quan, has been offered to Liu Ye (Dark Matter, Curse of the Golden Flowers, The Promise). Based on the real historical event and classic novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, The Battle of Red Cliff will feature the decisive battle (208 AD), which split the Han Empire into three kingdoms. At the turning point of the battle, the joint fleet of Sun Quan and Liu Bei destroyed the invading fleet of Cao Cao in Red Cliff with fire.

Earlier this month, Leung Chiu-Wai resigned from playing Zhuge Liang, the chief advisor of Liu Bei. He said he would need more time to prepare for his role but there was little time left before shooting. Reportedly, delivering his line in Ancient Chinese with Mandarin was the major challenge for him. His role now goes to Takeshi Kaneshiro.

The English title is "Kings of Kung Fu" rather than "King of Kung Fu". (sucks! sucks! sucks!) According to the Chinese press, the story tells a New York boy named Jason walks into an antique shop in China Town a d touches a cudgel he is not supposed to touch. He is brought back to the ancient China, where he meets a kung fu master Lu Yan (Jackie Chan), the Golden Swallow (a girl) and the Silent Monk (Jet Li). They have to work together to defeat Yu Jiang Warrior to rescue the Monkey King. Jet Li recently said this would be a a very relaxed family movie and his role would be very easy.

Variety reports Jet Li's long-overdue project A Monk in New York will be produced by Chuck Roven (The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Bulletproof Monk, Twelve Monkeys. Variety says  the project is about "a Tibetan monk's journey to Gotham and the calamities that befall him as he's faced with Western civilization." (Thanks to Jet Liang of JetLiCN.com for this one.)

The Chinese title has been changed from Ci Ma (the assassination of Ma) to Tou Ming Zhuang, which roughly means an application to join an organization, usually outlawed organization. The decision was made to distinguish this project from the original Ci Ma, directed by Chang Cheh in the 1970s. English title has recently been changed from The Violent Land to The Warlords.

The new movie is loosely based by the assassination incident in 1870 (late Qing Dynasty of China), which also inspired Chang Cheh’s Ci Ma (1973). Jet Li plays Ma Xinyi, a men with great ambition, who become a sworn brother with two bandits, Cao Erhu (Andy Lau) and Zhang Wenxiang (joins the (Takeshi Kaneshiro) and joints the imperial force to crack down the Taiping Rebellion with then. Ma is later appointed to a governor. After murders Cao and takes Cao’s wife Mi Lan (Xu Jinglei). Zhang swears to revenge his brother’s death. The story of “Ci Ma” (The Assassination of Ma) has been featured in many novels, Chinese operas, TV series and movies. Director Peter Chan has said his movie was not a remake of Chang Cheh's classic.

Wong Kar-Wai to Tell an Untitled Lesbian Love Story (Variety)

March 15, 2007

wireimage.com

Variety says Wong Kar-Wai will do an untitled project "of lesbian love at a high school in between helming 'Ashes of Time -- Redux' (set to be delivered in time for the fall festivals), and English-language pics 'The Lady From Shanghai' and 'My Blueberry Nights.'" Shooting is expect to begin in Taiwan next month. It is still unknown whether Wong will direct. It  will be executive produced by Stanley Kwan and lensed by Wang Yanni. This master really knows how to keep himself busy even though he has never looked busy. Earlier this week Wong, Norah Jones and Jude Law started shooting My Blueberry Nights again, at the exact same New York "bakery" where they were spotted last June. (Thanks to "Mighty Ganesha") A delivery of this film is due in May. As for The Lady from Shanghai with Nicole Kidman, no date has been promised. Ashes of Time - Redux will actually be a rework, rather than reshoot, of the martial art classic he directed more than a decade ago.

A Little Bit More about the Jackie Chan / Jet Li Project - Part 2 (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

March 13, 2007

(WB, ?)

According to Shanghai-based Jiefang Daily, the title remains as “King of Kung Fu (literal)” and it still sucks. both Jackie Chan and Jet Li will be playing to roles. Jet Li will play Tang Monk (Tripitaka) and his first disciple the Monkey King. Both characters are from classic novel Journey to the West and Tang Monk gets more screen time. Jackie Chan will play two of the Eight Immortals, from a series of Chinese fables. The cast may also include Li Bingbing (A World without Thief) and Liu Yifei (Love of May). They will play the “bride with white hair(?)” and “lady vengeance(?)”. The only un-cast role is the main villain. Jackie Chan will re-perform some classic moments from his Drunken Master and Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow. 80% of the US$70 project will be shot in China (Beijing, Shanghai, Hengdian World Studios, etc.) and the rest will be made in the States. Director Rob Minkoff might arrive in China to do the pre-production.

Update - Jane of Michelle Yeoh Web Theatre just dropped me this note:

Hi, thought you might be interested in this - regarding the recent round of "news" on Yan Hao's "Nanking. Christmas. 1937". According to older reports, for example, (here, here) it seems Yan gave his script to Viridian (and was re-written) years ago. I wonder if the project mentioned in these new reports is supposed to be the same project as the one with Simon West/Viridian, or Yan has been developing another one on his own. I have a feeling it is actually the same one. For the Simon West/Viridian project, West and art director Tom Sanders were in China (Nanjing and Shanghai) just after the Chinese New Year for pre-production. No shooting date has been officially announced.

Best wishes,
Jane

TRIANGLE' First Promotional Still (Celluloid Dreams)

March 5, 2007

(Celluloid Dreams)

This still is released by Celluloid Dreams, the project’s international sales agent. Triangle (previously known as The Iron Triangle and Jigsaw), is about one story told by three Hong Kong master directors in a relay. Tsui Hark, Ringo Lam and Johnnie To, who had known each other for decades, took turn to develop the project, each one of them independently wrote and directed a third of the film and they did not discuss their parts with others. With no script and very limited information about their roles, actors had to to figure out the overall plot through scenes with fellow cast members. However, everyone from the cast and all three directors are just like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle and the final picture will only be revealed on the big screen.

Andrew Lau Talks about his 2nd Hollywood Project, CONFESSION OF PAIN remake and API SWORD (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

March 2, 2007

(Sina.com)

Hong Kong Andrew Lau, the co-director of Infernal Affairs, which was remade to The Departed, and Confession of Pain, which will be remade by Warner Bros. has talked briefly to the local press about his plans. He said he would go to the States soon to negotiate his second Hollywood project (his first one, The Flock, a thriller starring Richard Gere and Claire Danes, will be released in North American this May). He would also discuss the adaptation of Confession of Pain, with The Departed writer William Monahan and Leonardo DiCarpio attached. A few Chinese papers claim Lau would direct the remake. I am not sure this is true. He would meet Martin Scorsese to say something like “congratulations”. And, after his second Hollywood project is done, he will do an adaptation of wuxia comic series “Api Magic Sword”, by Taiwanese artist Cheng Wen. Two persons he would like to cast – Jay Chou, who starred in his Initial D and Zhang Yimou’s Curse of the Golden Flower, and Korean actress Jun Ji-hyun, who appeared in his Daisy. Don’t know whether his partners, writer director Alan Mak and writer Felix Chong will be involved in these projects.

The Jackie Chan / Jet Li Project Will Happen This Month (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

March 2, 2007

(WB, ?)

Remember the J & J Project? The shooting will start later this month, most likely in Shanghai, according to the project’s Chinese partner, Beijing-based H. Bros. loosely Inspired by classic Chinese fantasy novel “Journey to the West” and penned by John Fusco (Hidalgo, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, The Babe, Young Guns), the still untitled project tells a New York kid accidentally travels to the Ancient China by touching a magic cudgel, which belongs to the Monkey King. He set up a journey to return the wand to the imprisoned Monkey King, he only one who can help the boy to get home. According to H. Bros., Jet Li will play Monkey King and Jackie Chan will play a character in the modern day. No one has been cast to play the kid, which will be a relatively minor role. As for the female lead (role unknown), H. Bros. would recommend one of Li Bingbing (A World without Thieves, Purple Butterfly), Ruby Lin (Life Express, China Strike Force) and Fann Wong (Shanghai Knights).

More Hong Kong Thrillers to Be Remade by Hollywood (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

March 1, 2007

(Media Asia, Applause Pictures)

Martin Scorsese’ The Departed, a remake of Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs, is such a triumph story and the Hollywood people have speeded up acquiring more Hong Kong copyrights. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has purchase the remake rights to Confession of Pain, which is created by the same team made Infernal Affairs. The Departed writer William Monahan is set to write and produce the remake and Leonardo DiCaprio is attached to star. Confession of Pain, released in December, starts with the brutal murder of a senior Hong Kong cop Hei’s (Leung Chiu-Wai) father-in-law. All evidences lead to two crooks, now dead. But the cop’s new wife believe the murderer is someone else and asked the cop former colleague Bong (Takeshi Kaneshiro), now an alcoholic detective, to investigate. Three years ago, Bong’s wife took her own life and he has not figured out why. Re-teamed up with Hei, Bong makes a shocking discovery of the truth behind the murder. Director Andrew Lau, who created made both Infernal Affairs and Confession of Pain, along with Alan Mak (writer / director) and Felix Chong (writer), said he would suggest DiCarpio to play the senior cop.

Another Hong Kong thriller, Protégé, now showing in Hong Kong and the mainland China, has also caught the attention of a few Hollywood studios, including Warner Bros., Paramount and Fox. Written and directed by Yee Tung-Shing, Protégé tells an undercover cop (Daniel Wu) has been selected as the successor by the biggest heroin cartel in Hong Kong (Andy Lau). While getting closer and closer to the cartel’s trade secret, the cop is tirelessly helping his new neither, a young heroin-addicted young mother runs away from her abusive husband.

Meanwhile the incident of claiming The Departed was based on a Japanese movie has drawn serious criticism on the Academy Awards in China. Media Asia, which produced Infernal Affairs, has sent a formal complain letter to the Academy.
