|
|
|
These spy photos and video, taken at a mountain location of Zhejiang
Province of China, are exclusively available on Sina.com. The
scene is pretty simple - four lead characters galloping through the
wilderness on horseback. Three of them, Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Liu
Yifei are shown in the photos, but Michael Angarano is missed out.
Either the spy took no pictures of him or Sina got no interest of
showing them.

The main villain, The White Hair Demoness,
played by Li Bingbing.

Nanking! Nanking! , by
director Lu Chuan (Kekexili: The Mountain Patrol,
The Missing Gun), will set
the story during the massacre the Japanese carried out after taking
Nanking (now translated as: Nanjing), the old capital city of China,
in December of 1937. These posters shows two photos, taken probably
by Japanese reporters after the fall of the city. The red marking
reads "Not Allowed." Many photographs showing war crimes by Japanese
soldiers were censored by the Japanese authority and stamped with
the same marking. Shooting of this historical film will start in
August. The US$10 million budget is shared by
China Film
Group Corp., Beijing-based Stellar MegaMedia Group, Hong Kong's
Media Asia Films and Nanjing-based Jiangsu Broadcasting Group.
Another Nanking Massacre
project
The Rape of Nanking, based on the
same title book by late
author Iris Chang,
is also in pre-production. Jointly produced by Nanjing-based Jiangsu
Cultural Industry Group and US studio Viridian Entertainment, with
US$40 million. The script is written by
William J. MacDonald
(Rome
the TV series) and the director is
Simon West (Con
Air,
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,
When a Stranger Calls).
In addition, Hong Kong director
Stanley Tong ( The

is planning to take on the subject with

Last summer, young Chinese director
Ning Hao's
low-budget comedy
Crazy Stone
became the most talked about and highest praised domestic made movie
in China last year. Shot with cheap digital camera, the fast-paced
and multi-storylined movie tells how different gangs of thieves are
trying to steal a piece of precious jade from the hand of a
dedicated security chief. Some have concluded that the comedy was a
mimic of Guy Ritchie’s
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
or Snatch. In
fact, Crazy Stone
tells a very original story, by Ning Hao, alone with Zhang Cheng and
Yue Xiaojun, which features many major social problems of today’s
China in a very hilarious and enjoyable way. The movie is so
influential that, reportedly, the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, booked
a private screening to get to know a little better about the life of
the country's low-end working/non-working class people. Budgeted at
about US$400,000, much thanks to Andy Lau’s wallet, this movie has
collected more than ten times of that.
According to
several Chinese newspaper, Ning Hao’s second comedy
Yin Pai Che Shou
(literal title: "The Silver Medal Cycler"), previous under the
working title “Crazy Racer,” will go into production next
month in Xiamen City of southeastern China. This time, the
state-owned China Film Group Corp. and
Warner China
Film HG Corp. are backing the project with much bigger budget and a
much shining cast. Structure of the story will be same as that of
Crazy Stone,
in much bigger scale. Ning and six others wrote five parallel
stories involving six groups of people. The center of the story is a
used-to-be professional bicycler, lost the national championship for
just 0.01 second at his most glorious moment, dreams about returning
to the racing track one day. Huang Bo, who played a straight-minded
thief in
Crazy Stone,
will play the bicycler. Anthony Wong will play his mentor, Andy Lau,
possibly, will take a cameo role, Thai martial-art star Tony Jaa
will portray an international drag cartel who knows countless ways
of disguising himself, Taiwanese actor Lee Lichun will play a
businessman who makes his money by conning everyone and another
Taiwanese actor Rong Hsiang will be a local drag dealer.

Sina.com has a few second of bloopers,
which will be shown at the end of the film and after the end credit.
Such after-credit bloopers are common in animations done by Pixar,
and are inspired by real bloopers shown during the end credits of
many Jackie Chan's movies. Interesting enough,
The Secret of the Magic Gourd
is Disney's first movie made specifically for the Chinese kids.
Neither Pixar nor any other Disney's animation department is
involved in the production of the movie. The CG work is done by
Hong Kong-based
Centro Digital Pictures Ltd., with credits include
Curse of the Golden Flower,
Kung Fu Hustle,
Shaolin Soccer,
Kill Bill,
The Emperor and the Assassin
and
The Storm Riders.
The story, based on a same title novel by Zhang Tianyi, tells a boy
finds a magic gourd (CG), who makes all his wishes come true and
some of his wishes backfire heavily out of control. The film will be
released next Friday in China.

These photos and video, acquired by Sina.com,
were believed taken during the production of John Woo’s Red Cliff
a few days ago. It shows soldiers of warlord Cao Cao being mobilized
inside their own camps. A miniature chopper was used to make aerial
shots and after a day of filming, the chopper crashed to the crowd.
There is no word on whether anyone was hurt during the incident.
A few boats covered by straw men were spotted on
the location, a reservoir doubling for the Long River (Yangtze
River). In classic historical novel “Roman of the Three Kingdoms”,
Commander Zhou Yu, lord Sun Quan’s man, ordered Zhu Geliang, the
chief advisor to Liu Bei, to manufacture one hundred thousand of
arrows in three days. These two lords are allies against Cao Cao.
Zhuge Liang then ordered to make hundreds of straw men, put them on
about twenty boats and launched a phony attack on Cao Cao fleet in a
foggy morning. Cao suspected the attack might be a trap and ordered
archers to fire at the enemy. Many of the arrows got embedded in the
straw men. By the end of the “battle”, Zhu Geliang collected arrows
more than he was asked to make. This story is based on a real
historical event, occurred about five years after the Battle of Red
Cliff. (Thanks to "xiaoyouxi's " contribution.)

Beijing-based HY. Brothers has finally got an official site

Not any more. Now we can watch trailers with relatively good
quality and enjoy movie stills without scar-like logos.

It seems the top executives have been struggling on how to call the
studio in English for many years. As the most productive
private-owned movie studio of China, it had multiple English names
in the past decades. It was originally called Hua Yi Brothers Taihe,
then it known as to Huayi Brothers, later shown as The H. Brothers
and finally changed to HY. Brothers.

A press conference for
Forbidden Kingdom
was held today at Hengdian World Studios of eastern China. You can
see everyone was wearing a t-shirt of Jet Li's
One Foundation. Jackie Chan
actually said in
his blog that he had not had so
much fun from fighting with someone since he fought for 15/16 years.
He had such satisfaction while fighting with Sammo Hung and Yuen
Biao many years ago. In this Hollywood production, Jackie Chan and
Jet Li got fight with each other for the first time. Jackie said
there fighting moves were so quick that director Rob Minkoff and
cinematographer Peter Pau decided to slow down the camera speed
(They are using a digital camera this time). Jet Li's face was
smashed by Jackie Chan's backpack during a take. For your
information, Colin Chou has been cast to play the Monkey King.

Though
the film is called " Blood Brothers"
international, the original Chinese title literally means
"Doorstep to Heaven" or "Gate to Heaven".
Set in the 1930s Shanghai and mainly shot inside Shanghai Film
Studios, the story tells three best friends arriving at the city of
opportunity. While making fortune with the local gangs, they choose
to go different ways, and turn against each other in the end. This
movie is the result of a collaborations of multiple studios from the
Greater China Region – the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
The cast includes Liu Ye, Daniel Wu, Tony Yang, Shu Qi, Chang Chen,
Li Xiaolu and Sun Honglei. Fortissimo Films is responsible for the
international sales outside of Asia. Release in the
Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan has been aimed at August this
summer. The poster will be distributed to theaters in the mainland
China and the design will probably only be used in the mainland
China. Like most movie poster designs come out of the country, this
one sucks.

Not sure how
much this one will go. According to an identified Hong Kong
newspaper, a movie project literally titled "The Iron Mask"
was put for pre-sales during the Cannes Film Festival. Marketed as a
"romantic actioner", this project got Yuen Wo-Ping attached as the
director and Andy Lau attached as the male lead. The paper claims
that the cast would include several South Korean actresses,
including Jeon Do-yeon, the latest Cannes Best Actress award winner,
Song Hye-gyo and Lim Soo-jun. However, the same paper also reports
Yuen said during an phone interview that they were only thinking
about casting Korean actress or actresses. |

The line-ups for Jin Jue Award and Asian New Talent
Award have been announced. As usually, the line-up for Jin Jue
Awards includes Chinese films have already been released in China -
The Knot and Shanghai Red. It would not be fair
for these two movie to compete with other titles, since some members
of the jury are Chinese and likely, they have seen these two movies
prior to the festival. In addition, the local audiences would be
less interested in watching movies, which have already been released
in local theaters and on video, would bring the total turnout of the
festival down.
The poorly designed and ill-functioned official site of the
