Two Hong Kong productions have been delivered to the local theaters. In The Detective, Aaron Kwok plays a Thai detective gets himself into a chain of murders after agrees to locate a mysterious woman. Beauty and the 7 Beast is about a fading mail star is teaching five losers how to date girls. Then he finds out the first target of his pupils is his long-lost daughter. The Detective is also becoming available in the mainland. However, the spotlight of the week goes to Ang Lee's Lust, Caution, which is now shown in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

This week, six new movies have been made available in the mainland China. Jiang Wen tells four inter-related stories in The Sun Also Rises, life stories of two teachers working in harsh conditions are featured in My Career As a Teacher and Feng Zhiyuan, the first uprising of the Chinese communists is recaptured in The First of August, how are several forest rangers and a gang of gold poachers are dealing with an approaching storm is told in Way of the Snowstorm, and life of a few men and women is deeply stirred by lies and bedrails is what Forgive and Forget all about. In Hong Kong, PANG Ho-Cheung's Exodus, about the women's worldwide conspiracy of killing all men, has been released. Released in Taiwan, I Saw a Beast tells a girl is feeling guilty about being homosexual and her partner is ending her marriage in order to stay with her true love...

LUST, CAUTION and USELESS CAPTURE Lions of Venice (...)

Hail, again, to Ang Lee, two years after capturing the Golden Lion with Brokeback Mountain, returned to Venice and got the same lion again with his newly completed Lust, Caution.  Also congradulate to Jia Zhangke, who won the Golden Lion last year with feature film Still Life, received the the top prize of the documentary category, for Useless.

This week, three little films released in the mainland China. Invisible Wings tells how a young girl who lost both of her armies becomes a swimmer, Air Diary about the story of a girl singer and a guy who owns a bar. Crazy in Love is an urban comedy about what happens after guys meet girls. Naraka 19, a horror flick is released yesterday in Hong Kong. It tells a girl uncovering the truth behind the alleged 19th lay of hell.

Stephen Chow plays a very poor dad, who works very hard to support his son attending a private school. 9 year old girl Xu Jiao plays his son and actress Zhang Yuqi plays a school teacher, who is really an alien. One day Stephen Chow discovered a strange "toy" in the trash and gives it to his son as a birthday present. Soon they find out the "toy" is a communication device lost y the alien. Once targeted at this summer, the release in Asia has been pushed back to the summer next year. Reportedly Stephen Chow, has run into some problems related to CG effects and voice-over.

Principal shooting of the first Jackie Chan-Jet Li collaboration has wrapped up in China, according to Sina.com. The Hollywood production blends the talents of two top on-screen martial-art stars, stories inspired by classic fantasy novel Journey to the West, Chinese folklore about "The Eight Immortals" as well as Dr. Louis Cha's wuxia novel White Hair Demoness, which has been on screen numerous times. Michael Angarano plays an American kid who  is brought back to the ancient China after getting in touched with a magic cudgel. He them teams up with Lu Yan (Jackie Chan), The Silent Monk (Jet Li) and Golden Sparrow (Liu Yifei) to free the imprisoned Monkey King (Jet Li) and return the cudgel to him. Of cause their trip is not safe. The White Hair Deomness (Li Bingbing) and her master Jade War Lord (Collin Chou) are not hesitating to stop them. The script is written by John Fusco and the director is Rob Minkoff. Yuen Wo-Ping is on board as the choreographer and the executive producer and the man behind the camera is Peter Pau. Three South Korean films, Macrograph, Inc., Digital Tetra Inc. (DTI) and Footage are shaire the task of CG effects. The North American release is aimed at April 18, 2008 and the dates for other countries are not determined.

In 17, a low budget film (US$1 million) from young Chinese director Ji Cheng, Joan Chen and Zou Shuang played a single mother and his son, named 17. Grew up with his adoptive parents, young 17 was found by his birth mother and after lived with his mother for 10 years, 17 year old 17 left her again. Two films starring Joan Chen have been premiered at the Venice International Film Festival - Lust, Caution and The Sun Also Rises.

This year, more people would walked walk away from the award ceremony with golden bauhinias than in any previous year, however less half winner actually showed up. Three out of five nominees  share the title of Best Films - After This Our Exile, Battle of Wits and Exiled. Johnnie To won the Best Director award for Exiled. Lau Ching-Wan was named the Best Actor for his performance in My Name Is Fame. Charlene Choi (Simply Actors) and Gong Li (Curse of the Golden Flower) share the Best Actress title. Young boy Ng King-to (Ian Iskandar Gouw) won double awards - Best Support Actor and Best New Performer, for his big screen debut in After This Our Exiled. Zhou Xun was named the Best Supporting Actress for The Banquet.

 

Even though Exodus, the latest from director Pang Ho-Cheung, was nominated in 10 nominations, it only collected one trophy for the Award for Creativity. Exodus, an unreleased film being nominated is something new for the annual awards. It is reported that many voters, members of Hong Kong Film Critics Association, were boycotting the film or even the awards.
