At a press conference in Beijing,
Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon
director
Daniel Lee
revealed two projects he would do. The first one is titled
Bi Wu
(literally means "Martial Match"), with a story across half century
and half of the world. It tells an old Chinese man living in the
Chinatown of an American city. He is curing people with injury for
living and raised four children single handedly. Half century ago,
back in China, he made a pledge with another martial artist to have
match and the pledge remains unfulfilled. The movie will also
involves the gap and conflict between the older generation of
Chinese Americans and their children, as well as the culture
difference and exchange between the east and the west. It will focus
on showing harmony and tolerance through the spirit of wushu. Lee
said Sammo Hung, who worked with Lee in
Three Kingdom
and Dragon Squad,
has agreed to play the lead. Lee wants to cast the best on-screen
fighters of today and the pass for this movie. He has also asked
Jackie Chan to invite Whang Ing-Sik and Hwang Jang-Lee to join the
project. Whang played a fighter in Bruce Lee's last project
Game of Death and
Hwang Jang-Lee has also stared in many martial-art movies, include
several titles starring Bruce Lee. Budgeted at HK$30 millions
(US$3.9 millions), the movie will go into product this October.
Another project,
Jiang Jun
(literally means: "The General"), which will be set in the chaotic
Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdom era of Chinese history (AD 907-960),
the same era featured in
The Banquet
(or "Legend of the Black
Scorpion" by
Dragon Dynasty, jointly-owned by The Weinstein Company and Genius
Products). It tells the emperor, who has become a
puppet of an evil minister, asks a general stations in the
northeastern frontier to free him and orders a general of the
Justice Department to deliver the message. Then the general of the
Justice Dept. disguises as a security guard and escorts some goods
to the northwest with the daughter of the late owner of the escort
service. Casting is underway for the US$10 million project and Lee
implied Andy Lau, just played the lead in
Three Kingdoms, would take the
lead again in this one.

With the Chinese New Year ended, no homemade titles are released
this week, except imports. In the mainland China, Hong Kong director
Johnnie To's psychological thriller
Mad Detective
is allowed to hit the local theater after shots of graphic violence
was removed. Other releases include
Atonement, with several scenes of war horror and sexual
violence being cut, and the uncut version of
The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep. The Chinese government
set a quota of on imported foreign movies, which allows up to 20
titles to be theatrically released in China, under the format of
profit-sharing. Most of them have been Hollywood blockbusters, which
are also major contributors of the country's box-office income. To
reduce the influence of Hollywood movies and support locally made
blockbusters, the Chinese government has been, though never openly
admitted, playing tricks to reduce the revenue of imported titles.
Such tricks include putting temporary blackouts on foreign films,
refusing titles with sensitive subjects and importing movies which
will only do moderately well in theaters, such as "artistic" films
like
Atonement
and kids' movies like
The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep.
In Hong
Kong, no restriction is on imported films. Tittles released this
week include both the "artistic" and the "entertaining":
The Bucket List,
Juno,
The Mist
and
Vantage
Point.
In
Taiwan, there is no restriction either and the local film industry
is also showing little sign of rebounding. Movies hitting theaters
of the island are:
Balls
of Fury,
The Haunted Drum,
Penelope,
Persepolis,
Rambo,
Diving Bell and the
Butterfly
and
Superbad.

Lydia Shum,
one of the most recognizable TV and film icons, has passed away
earlier this morning in Hong Kong. Shum was born in Shanghai in 1947
and moved to Hong Kong in 1958. She started her acting career two
years later with Shaw Bros. as a child star and had starred in over
70 movies and TV series. She was also a successful TV host at Hong
Kong's TVB. Almost all of them are comedies and most her roles are no
more than supporting leads. Her trademark look, with a pair of
wing-tip frame coke bottle glasses and big hair, made her famous
among the Chinese around the world. Because she was visibly
obsessed, she was given the nick name "Fay-Fay", which means "Fatty"
(not an offensive word.) She fell series ill in 2005 and suffered
from multiple illnesses in the past three years. Shum had a daughter
Joyce Yan Yee Cheng with her ex-husband Adam Cheng.
