Rumor says Zhang Yimou
has purchased the remake rights of Coen Brothers' 1984 classic
thriller
Blood Simple.
Zhang Yimou's long time partner producer Zhang Weiping is neither
denying it nor confirming it. He only said it was possible the movie
would be based on a Hollywood movie.
Blood Simple's
tells a complex story starts with a jealous rich man hiring a
private investigator to kill his cheating wife and her lover.
According to Zhang Weiping, the story, set in the ancient time,
would look like a sandwich, a complete story on the outside with a
thriller and a comedy on the inside.
Does this mean we will also see some marital art fight scene
choreographed by Ching Siu-Tung? The remake is titled San Qiang
Pai An Jing Qi, which roughly means "Three Spears, Amazed to
Strike the Table". Which is a variation of title of two classic
Chinese books,
"First Quarter, Amazed to Strike the Table and
First Quarter, , Amazed to Strike the Table",
collections of dozens of short thrilling stories.
For the thriller, the
cast include Sun Honglei (starred in Zhang's The Road Home
and will play the killer) and Ni Dahong (played the imperial doctor
in Zhang's Curse of the Golden Flower), and for the comedy,
the cast include two stage comedians Xiao Shen Yang and Wang Xiaohua.
The script is jointly penned by Shi Jianquan, Shang Jing and other
writer. Filming will begin by June in China's Gansu Province, known
for its desert Silk Road, which also featured in Zhang's Hero.
Release in China is set in December.
Until a few months back,
Jin Ling Shi San Chai (literal: 13 Beauties of Jinling),
was the project Zhang Yimou was working on after he completed the
opening ceremony of Beijing Olympic. Based on the same title novel
by woman writer Yan Geling, the story is set in 1937/38, during the
Nanjing Massacre carried out by the Japanese troops, the capital
city of China. Inspired by a real story, the novel tells Japanese
soldiers break into the refugee camp and ask to "borough" young
women to provide sex "service" to the Japanese. To protect the life
of others in the camp, 13 prostitutes volunteer to go with the
Japanese. Earlier this year Zhang Yimou watched another director Lu
Chuan's City of Life and Death, he discovered a similar
story in the movie, and immediately cancelled or halted his own
Nanjing project.

Spring Fever
The fourth Cannes entry by Chinese director Lou
Ye, who only managed to shoot six films since 1994. He caught the
world’s attention with Suzhou River submitted in Cannes in
2000. Both the film and the submission are unapproved by the Chinese
government, therefore both him and he was banned from making movies
for two years. In 2003, he returned to Cannes with the approved
Purple Butterfly, then he returned again in 2006 with the
unapproved Summer Palace. The Summer Palace incident
was so severely, that Lou, his producer and the studio behind it
were banned from making movies for five years. Spring Fever, shot in
Chinese city of Nanjing with a full Chinese cast, was actually
funded by studios outside of the mainland China, including one from
Hong Kong, which is out off the grip of Chinese film censors. Thanks
to the “One Country, Two Systems” policy invented by late Chinese
leader Deng Xiaoping, Hong Kong is self-running. But in the official
press release, it is representing China again. This will
definitively make the censors in Beijing very mad! Another Chinese
film, Lu Chuan’s Nanjing Massacre drama City of Life and Death,
once was considered as a possible candidate, fails to appear on the
list. Does this mean the film was pulled out in the last minute,
after the Chinese government heard Summer Fever is under the
name of China instead of Hong Kong? Just a guess. Lou Ye has always
been like an outcast in China. His films, often with unconventional
storylines, are not widely praised even among the fans of art films.
Here is Spring Fever’s plot, for you reference:
China, 2007. Spring. As Nature gradually awakens
and an intoxicating spring breeze full of life blows, as they drive
together to the coast, love and sexual passion grow in the hearts of
Jiang Cheng, his friend Luo Haitao and Xiaoxue, a beautiful young
woman. All three fall prey to an exhilarating sickness of the
senses, a dangerous malady that misleads the heart… A beautiful
erotic "menage à trois".
Face
Tsai Ming-Liang is back! With Face, with more
erotic and funny story? His previous Cannes entries are The Hole
(2000) and What Time Is It Over There? (2001) As the first
full-length film outside of Taiwan, Face is a big leap
forward for him. He called the shooting as a rebirth for him.
Story of Face sounds exactly like the filming of
Face. It tells a Taiwanese director, very excited about being
allowed to shot inside the Louvre, cast a long line of French stars
for the project. Then the shooting run into trouble again and again,
which pushes him on the brink of a nerve break down. Tsai is playing
the director, and the French stars are playing themselves. What’s
real and what’s unreal?
Vengeance
Johnnie To, the god-father of today’s Hong Kong
cinematic crime action, is back, with Vengeance. The plot
setup is very simple. A French assassin-turned-chef travels to Hong
Kong to go after the one who murdered his daughter. French veteran
Alain Delon once in talking of playing the lead. But in the end, the
role went to another Frenchman, Johnny Hallyday. And, what a Johnnie
To movie is going to be without his most frequently used actors. Of
cause, Vengeance is no exception: Simon Yam, Anthony Wong,
Lam Ka-Tung, Lam Suet…
Taking Woodstock
His Brokeback Mountain and Lust,
Caution did not show up in Cannes. Does Lee actually capture the
spirit of Woodstock? Doesn’t matter. Will this one better than his
previous movies? Doesn’t matter. What really matter? Ang Lee!
Petition
In China, when ordinary citizens’ rights were
violated, often by the low-level government entities, many of them
would choose to petition to the higher-level government, and the
petition sometimes last years even decades. Director Zhao Liang
spent 12 years to documents the life of such people called the
petitioners. Petition will be screen in Cannes as part of Special
Screenings. This is a two-hour version, edited from the original
five-hour cut.

SOUND OF WIND
May Shock Your Mind

Based on the popular same title book by Mai Jia,
Sound of Wind (Feng Sheng) is an espionage drama challenging
the mind of the audiences. It is set in Hangzhou, a Chinese city
occupied by the Japanese during WWII.
In the original story, the protagonist is a
Communist spy codenamed Old Ghost, who infiltrated the spy agency of
the Japanese controlled puppet government, with the talent of
code-braking. A piece of crucial information sent out by Old Ghost
is intercepted by the Japanese. To dig out the mole, the Japanese
sent Old Ghost and another three top suspects to a mansion house for
questioning. Old Ghost has to send the info out before it is too
late while protecting his/her own identity. The alliance is another
spy working for the Chinese government, codenamed 312.
According to Wang Zhonglei, president of Huayi
Brothers, which produced the movie, the story has been changed
drastically during the adaptation and the ending has been set to
contain a big surprise. The plot development and the ending have
been kept as a top secret by Huayi Bros. Scenes are shot chronically
following the timeline in the story and the cast members have yet
received the final part of the script.
Sound of Wind is directed by Gao Qunshu (The
Tokyo Trail) and Chen Kuo-fu, producer of Huayi’s war drama
Assembly.
The major cast members are: Zhang Haiyu, Zhou Xun,
Li Bingbing, Huang Xiaoming, Ying Da, Alec Su, Wang Zhiwen, Ni
Dahong. Cameo stars include: Liu Weiwi, Zhu Xu, Zhang Yibai, Shi
Zhaoqi, Wu Gang, Liu Jiajia, Liu Yun, Ai Dai.
Production has begun for two months. Variety says it will last for
another eight months. I don't think so. eight months should be
enough for completing both the production and the post-production.
