2046 Plot Description
(MonkeyPeaches Exclusive) |
|
September 12, 2004 |

 |
|
(Block
2 Pictures / Shanghai Film Group Corp.) |
1966, when Chow Mo-Wan (Leung Chiu-Wai)
left
Hong Kong, he was carrying a secret with him, until, in
Singapore, he met Su Li-Zhen (Gong Li). She reminded him another
woman, a woman from his past (Maggie Cheung), whose name was also Su Li-Zhen.
He followed the Su Li-Zhen of 1966 everywhere she went inside a
casino. She salvaged him from self-delusion and refused to
go with him.
Chow
Mo-Wan returned to Hong Kong alone and on Christmas Eve, he met
Lu Lu (Lau Kar-ling), another
woman he knew, and now had no memory of their relationship in the
past. Chow discovered a familiar number at the hotel Lu Lu stayed in - 2046. Room 2046 was filled with memory of the days he had
with Su Li-Zhen, and trace of the good time Lu Lu spent with her
boyfriend CC (Chang Chen).
Chow Mo-Wan moved into Room 2047. He met
two daughters of the hotel owner (Wang Sum), Wang Jie Wen (Dong Jie) and
Wang Jing Wen (Faye Wong). Jie Wen just started to learn what love
was and Jing Wen's relationship with her Japanese boyfriend (Kimura
Takuya) was not allowed by his father. A new tenant, Bai Ling (Zhang Ziyi), moved
into the hotel and started seducing Chow Mo-Wan. When she finally
fell for him, she realized he no longer had any feeling for women.
Chow Mo-Wan starting writing a new
book, titled 2046. In the story, a train departed for 2046 and
people boarded the train would recover their lost memories. No one
wanted to leave 2046, except Tak (Kimura Takuya). In the book, the
real life Wang Jing Wen became a senseless robot, who offered Tak
great joy he had thirsted for. Her existence was the biggest secret
of Tak.
In the year 2046, the train still
routinely departed for 2046...
This is the plot description, originally
written in Chinese, is released by Shanghai Film Studios, which
co-produced the film. It suggested the film is a sequel to In The
Mood For Love, but do you really believe Wong Kar-Wai is making
a sequel?

2046, one of the most anticipated
films only until a few days ago, departed Cannes empty-handed. Received
mixed to positive reviews, 2046 has been suspected to be, by
many, still a work-print. Have been working on the project for almost
five years, Wong Kar-Wai might still don't know what the final cut
should be. Why was the production so ever-lasting? He had three factors
to blame. The first one is CG effect, which was very time-consuming. The
second one is location, or more precisely, locations, Shanghai, Hong
Kong, Macao, Thailand... Every time he made some alteration, he had to
rush to various locations. And the third one is something occurred
during the post-production. Is the one premièred in Cannes really the
completed product? Wong said we would see a completely different version
of 2046 if he was given three additional weeks or months. 2046
has been referred to, by some, not only the title of the film but also
the year of its completion. Wong said he had heard the joke repeatedly,
which made him very sick, and the joke should end, because he had
promised not to touch the film ever again and leave the unused material
to the DVD.

also the leading woman of Clean, written and directed by her
ex-husband Olivier Assayas. A few images from Zhang Yimou's Shi

House Of Flying Daggers) and Breaking News, by Hong

Wong Kar-Wai Starts
Talking 2046
(MonkeyPeaches Exclusive) |
|
November 4, 2003 |
|
2046 is the continuation of
In The Mood For Love. The idea of
the film started as the time of In The Mood For Love, or even a
month in ahead, and it's a sci-fi story. The main idea is 'nothing will
last forever, not even commitment.' Some commitments will change along
with time. Story of the film is told as two parts, one is about the past
and the other one is about the future.
- This is what Wong Kar-Wai said about
2046, which has been in production for over four years.

Some Details Of 2046's
Filming In Shanghai
(MonkeyPeaches Exclusive) |
|
October 22, 2003 |
|
According to Beijing based newspaper
Youth Times, Wong Kar-Wai is making 2046 at two locations in
Shanghai -
East Wind Hotel, and an abandoned
aircraft factory house, now known as Qiusuo Studio. East Wind Hotel,
built in 1910 and was modeled after the palaces of British royalty, is
used for a "futuristic hotel". Some scenes with
Kimura Takuya and
Wong Faye,
playing a pair of robot lovers, are shot inside the aircraft factory
house. A futuristic train along with a track have been built on the set.
These two robots "met on the train" and
Wong Faye
"repeatedly jumped on and off the train", according to the paper. Part
of the set will be created digitally by French effect house
BUF
during the process of post-production.

2046 Production
Postponed, Again (MonkeyPeaches
Exclusive) |
|
October 12, 2003 |
|
Filming of 2046 will not restart
until, at least, next year. someone from Shanghai Film Studio told
Chinese paper Shenyang Today a few days ago. Last part of the
film, the climax, will be shot in Shanghai with assistance from the
studio. However, stars of the huge cast and crew do not share the
same schedule and gathering them together at one place to do one
thing is somewhat impossible, at least for the rest of the year.
Wong Kar-Wai is currently in Shanghai working on the post-production
of his one third of
Eros and the pre-production of
Subway (literal) he produced. Leung Chiu-Wai has committed to
Infernal Affairs III and Subway; Zhang Ziyi is doing
Shi Mian Mai Fu in Ukraine; and Lau Kar-ling is connected to
Seven Years Itch...
Born in Shanghai and moved to Hong Kong
at five, Wong Kar-Wai planned to place the story of In The Mood
For Love in his birthplace. But failing to get the permission to
shoot in the city forced he to move both the story setting and the
location to Hong Kong. We still know nothing about the plot of
2046. However, it is closely associated to In The Mood For
Love. 2046 is in fact the number of the room at which the two
lovers meet in In The Mood For Love.

2046 Pushed To Spring 2004
(MonkeyPeaches Exclusive) |

September 7,
2003 |

One third of 2046 still remains
un-shot, according to a tip Shenyang Today received from
someone working for Shanghai Film Studio, which will provide the
logistic support of the film's production in Shanghai. It is
absolutely hopeless for an October release and according to this
anonymous person, the film would not be out until next spring.
Director Wong Kar-Wai is now post-processing the two third footages
already shot. A new recordist has been hired to redo the sound
remix. Wong Kar-Wai will soon return to Shanghai, his hometown, to
shoot the futuristic part of the film, according to the anonymous
person. Wong is also busying on making the special disc edition of
Happy Together (Chun Guang Zha Xie).
He never focuses on the main job.

Six-Minute Trailer Of 2046
(MonkeyPeaches Exclusive) |

July 30, 2003 |

"Visual and colors of the
trailer are very beautiful! Just felt like
IN THE
MOOD FOR LOVE. There was a shot with Maggie Cheung turning her
head. (Spoiler Alert! Highlight to read!)
She wore a metal collar around her neck and
judging from her moves, she should be a robot. Wong Faye and Zhang
Ziyi looked no different from any normal woman. (I) couldn't guess
their professions. There was a long shot of a bed scene with a man
and a woman fully naked. It was very blur and beautiful. But I
couldn't see who they were. I felt like watching an oil painting at
the Louvre of Paris. It's not pornography, not at all."
(End of the Alert) This is what Wu
Hehu, the marketing director of the theater chain owned by Shanghai
Film Studios, told Nanfang Daily. According to the paper,
Wong Kar-Wai will move the production to his hometown Shanghai in
September or October. The release date in China (including Hong
Kong) has been pushed from October back to the Christmas.

Three promotional stills
have been posted on the official site of
Océan Films - Zhang Ziyi, Leung Chiu-Wai and a futuristic city scene
(note: "ville" means "city" in French).
The site (click

2046, c’est un nombre qui évoque
une année, cinquante ans après la cession de Hong Kong à la Chine…
mais c’est aussi le nombre qui ne quitte pas l’esprit de Chow
Mo-Wan (Tony Leung), depuis In the Mood for Love.

What's 2046 All About
(MonkeyPeaches Exclusive) |
|
July 15, 2003 |
|
Want to know what 2046 is talking about? Nanfang Daily just
posted a mini plot description, which was obtained from "someone who
knows".
A
writer (Leung Chiu-Wai) meets a prostitute (Maggie Cheung) at a
hotel (2046 is the number of the room he stays in). He then starts
telling her stories of his love life. In each story, the writer had
a short-lived relationship with a girl. Wong Faye, Zhang Ziyi and
Chang Chen plays a group of robots who also have their own desire
for love. Human and robots, they have different understanding of and
attitude toward love, which lead to the result unique to their own.
Kimura Takuya plays a Japanese who has a
relationship with one of the girls.

recently. He said the story of 2046 starts like this:
A writer checks into a
clock hotel and meets a prostitute staying at Room 2046. Then he
starts writing a story filled with all kind of fantasies, based what
happened at Room 2046...

the interior of Oriental Hotel, which cost HK$5 million (US$640,000)
to build. These pictures were later posted on a local tabloid. While
the authority has started to investigate, Wong Kar-Wai stopped the
filming and ordered the set being rebuilt. Shooting has finally
re-started last Thursday after being halted for a month and Leung
Chiu-Wai has been spotted entering the set. Nanfang Daily
reports this month production of 2046 will move to Shanghai,
director Wong Kar-Wai's hometown. According to Shanghai Film

2046 Will Miss The Cannes
(MonkeyPeaches Exclusive) |
|
March 24, 2003 |

Early reports suggests director Wong Kar-Wai will make a rush
delivery of his 2046 to this year's Cannes Film Festival. But
according to news from an unidentified source, there is little hope
for that, because, according to the Taiwanese representative of
Wong's company, the filming has not ended and work on a lot of CG
effects have not started yet. According to Sina.com, Leung
Chiu-Wai has finished all scenes with Zhang Ziyi, and he knew
nothing about his scenes with Maggie Cheung, Faye Wong and
Lau Kar-ling, because he had not got the
script yet. He said Zhang Ziyi was playing a dancer and he had some
hot kissing scene with her. |

Leung Chiu-Wai, Zhang
Ziyi Making 2046 In Macao
(MonkeyPeaches Exclusive) |
|
March 7, 2003 |
|
Hong Kong's Oriental Daily reports Wong Kar-Wai was shooting
2046 in a small river bank street of Macao. For eight hours, Leung
Chiu-Wai and Zhang Ziyi walked back-in-forth at the chilling and
raining night and the scene is just over ten second long, according
to the paper. Both of them dressed very 1950's and the street, which
was probably used to double the old Hong Kong, was also made very
old by the crew. The chance of 2046 being premièred at this year's
Cannes Film Festival is very slim because the production is not done
yet. Zhang Ziyi will fly to Shanghai to prepare for her next film,
JASMINES BLOOM.

Leung Chiu-Wai |
Zhang Ziyi |
The mysterious iceberg called 2046 has shown its tip today. Hong
Kong's Oriental Daily just posted two spy photos showing
Leung Chiu-Wai and Zhang Ziyi on the set of 2046. Nobody knows why
everybody looks like from the 1950's and what exactly the
relationship between 2046 and IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE is.
Everyone,
Leung Chiu-Wai, Maggie Cheung, Faye
Wong, Lau Kar-ling and Kimura Takuya has shown up, everyone except
Kimura Takuya. Rumor has suggested he was no longer on the list.
Earlier the cast members have received training of dance, yoga and
Chinese martial-art. Why? Nobody knows. 2046 is continuously
surrounded by mysteries, which cannot be solved until May, in which
it will be premièred at the Cannes Film Festival. Will it make it?
It's another mystery.

Zhang Ziyi Confirmed The
ReBoot Of 2046
(MnkeyPeaches Exclusive) |
|
January 16, 2002 |
|
Zhang Ziyi told a Chinese paper that
shooting of 2046 has re-started several days ago in Hong Kong and it
will end in March. But, director Wong Kar-Wai has spent three years
on this one. Should be trust him this time? Zhang Ziyi said she was
not allowed to say anything about the storyline and she did not know
exactly who had been cast for the film beside him because scenes she
has made so far only contain herself. 21dnn.com reports Chang
Chen, another cast member of 2046, has not been shaving and cutting
his hair for three months and Wong Kar-Wai has not told him what his
role is. According to Shanghai Evening Post, young actress Fu
Miao is playing a minor role in 2046.
Wong Kar-Wai started working on 2046
right after IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE. It is somewhat related to IN THE
MOOD FOR LOVE with a little futuristic twist. That's all we know so
far. The cast should also include Leung Chiu-Wai, Maggie Cheung,
Faye Wong, Lau Kar-ling and Kimura Takuya. Wong has probably
trashed everything he has shot two years ago and tries to start it
all over again. He has promised to show the final print at the
coming Cannes Film Festival.

book - "Chun Qiu" (bottom) and "Zuo Zhuan" (top). Chun Qiu,
means "Spring and Autumn" and was written by Confucius, is a
book about Chinese history from 722 to 481 BC. This period was
later named Spring and Autumn Period by historians. Zuo
Zhuan is another history written partially based on Chun Qiu. |
Zhang Ziyi just had another interview with Beijing Times. She
talked about her experience with HERO, her understanding of the plot
of 2046 and her memory of PURPLE BUTTERFLY.
HERO
You have said you didn't get too many scenes in HERO and hoped
for less media coverage for yourself. Is there anything
unforgettable to you personally?
It's indeed I only played a supporting role. Since the day the
shooting began, I always tried to participate in this movie as a
student or an audience. There are many unforgettable moments. If
(you are asking for) anything special, it is probably the maple
forest (note: should be diversiform-leaved poplar forest) fist scene
with Maggie Cheung. We were all hanging in the air. When making the
shot with I diving onto (her), I felt my eye almost burst out off
the sockets. I was holding the twin sabers. It's very heavy.
Many are not expecting HERO to get anything from the Oscar and
say the music is too similar to that of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN
DRAGON (note: both were composed by Tan Dun). Do you have any
prediction?
Saying they are too similar, because they don't understand HERO. I
think there is no violence in it and it is a passionate film which
can warm your heart and inspire your soul, and is about a nation's
cohesion. The American audiences, have been through the "9.11", will
like it.
2046
Are you going to start working on 2046 this month?
Yes. Even my mom could be tired of it, if it was delayed any
further. If I remembered correctly, Wong Kar-Wai said he had been
working on the film for almost three years. It's probably a new
record of the longest pre-production for a film. Design of my
character has been finalized and it has been announced at the Cannes
Film Festival, but there is just no word on when the shooting will
begin.
Do you know the plot line of 2046?
I haven't read any final outline, but based on several conversations
with Wong Kar-Wai, I think 2046 is actually the sequel of IN THE
MOOD FOR LOVE. "2046" is actually the number of the room Leung Chiu-Wai
and Maggie Cheung met. After Maggie Cheung has left, Leung Chiu-Wai
stays in the room alone and has many recalls and imaginations, maybe
are about the past or the future. Later Maggie Cheung returns to
room 2046. I think this is probably the plot of 2046. Maybe only
this kind of structure can include more and more actors being
mentioned by the media. It's Wang Kar-Wai's improvisation.
PURPLE BUTTERFLY
Is PURPLE BUTTERFLY a pure drama?
I don't know. We must judge a film after it is completed, especially
for a film made by such young director like Lou Ye. PURPLE BUTTERFLY
has a very legendary main storyline but it's up to Lou Ye - to be a
drama or a very stylized film. I don't know his intension. Young
directors are often unpredictable and this is the main reason I
chose PURPLE BUTTERFLY.
Will this film be shown at next year's Cannes Film Festival?
Yes, basically. I hope PURPLE BUTTERFLY can be as successful as
CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON (at Cannes).
How do you judge director Lou Ye?
All Chinese directors I want to work with are talented, including
Lou Ye. When I decided to take PURPLE BUTTERFLY, I got a big support
from director Zhang Yimou. He said there were many (I) can learn
from this generation of directors like Lou Ye.
The Next
Have you chosen your next project?
I have read some scripts and director (Zhang Yimou) has told me
Gu Changwei and
Hou Yong were planning their maiden films. They are the
best cinematographers among the Fifth Generation (of filmmakers). I
think to be a good film director, most importantly, you must show
your own artistic style and as the same time, knows how to tell a
story to ordinary audiences. Therefore, I think Zhang Yimou is the
best.

Kar-Wai made the promise of delivering the film by May next year.
Also according to the paper, Chinese actress Zhao Wei, who has
worked in Wong Kar-Wai's CHINESE ODYSSEY 2002 and has her new movie
SO CLOSE coming soon, has jointed the cast. However, her agent has
not positively confirmed it.

Three 2046 Production
Stills
(MnkeyPeaches Exclusive) |

These three photos, claimed to be
production stills of 2046, appeared on a Chinese online forum.
According to the individual posted it, they are from the film's
French distributor Ocean Films. We can see Maggie Cheung wearing
almost exactly the same costume she has worn in IN THE MOOD FOR
LOVE.
My guess is they were shot either during
the filming of IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE when director Wong Kar-Wai
intended to use them in 2046 or shot during the first round of 2046
filming, which has already been halted a while ago.
