Weinstein and Columbia Battle over CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON Se/Prequel Rights (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

April 14, 2006

(Columbia Pictures)

TMZ.com report that The Weinstein Co. just filed a lawsuit in the States in attempt to block Columbia Pictures, which co-financed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, from using the Crane - Iron Pentalogy by Chinese novelist Wang Dulu. The Weinstein Co. claims to own "the option to acquire the motion picture, television, state, publishing and other rights to the Wang Books." Last month, The Weinstein Co. announced its plan of adapting the entire Crane - Iron Pentalogy, excluding Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, to the big screen and the stage.

When Ang Lee made Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon a few years ago, he did some serious trimming and overhaul of the story of the original same name novel, which is part 4 of the pentalogy. The novel itself was not a major factor contributed to the success of the movie, and it would also mean adapting the rest of the series might not be as profitable as what the Weinstein brothers hoped for.

Precious Sword, Gold Hairpin, part 2 of the pentalogy and Sword Spirt, Pearl, part 3 of the pentalogy, are about the young Li Mu Bai (played by Chow Yun-Fat) and Yu Shu Lien (played by Michelle Yeoh); Crane Frightens Kun Lun, part 1 of the pentalogy is about Jiang Xiaohe, master of Li Mu Bai; and Iron Rider, Silver Vase is about Han Tiefang, the son of Jen (Zhang Ziyi) and Lo (Chang Chen). It would be quite difficult to bring back the original cast and crew, including Ang Lee, and without the original cast and crew, any sequel or prequel would hardly make a sale.

The Weinstein Co. Swallows CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON Se/Prequel Rights

(MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

March 10, 2006

(Sony Pictures)

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Weinstein Co. has acquired worldwide screen and stage rights to the entire Crane - Iron Pentalogy. Harvey Weinstein has envisioned "a series of great films, much like the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy. He said, "I think this is an opportunity to create something revolutionary," and "they will in effects serve as prequels and sequels to 'Crouching Tiger," which will not itself be remade for the screen."

Ang Lee acquired the rights to the entire series before he began making Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Now the rights have been transferred to the Weinsteins. Does this means Ang Lee finally gives up pushing for any sequel / prequel by his own? The Weinsteins are powerful creatures, who are capable of tossing money and talented filmmakers into any project they want. However, they are also money-hungry businessmen, which makes me fear that some cheap se/prequels would be manufactured just to dig some gold from the success of the Ang Lee's film.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon the movie was loosely based on the same title fourth installment of Crane - Iron Pentalogy, written by Wang Dulu in the 1930s. The first of the series, Crane Frightens Kun Lun, is about a young sward master named Jiang Xiaohe (Southern Crane), who would revenge his father, who was killed by Bao Kunlun, and was also in love with Bao Kunlun's granddaughter' the second of the series, Precious Sword, Gold Hairpin, is about a love-triangle with Li Mu Bai (played by Chow Yun-Fat), Yu Shu Lien (played by Michelle Yeoh) and Yu's fiancé Meng Sizhao; the third of the series, Sword Sprit, Pearl Shine, is about Li Mu Bai's adventure with a precious sword called The Green Destiny and Luo Yangbao stole an imperial pearl from the Forbidden City; the fourth of the series is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; the fifth of the series, Iron Rider, Silver Vase is about Han Tiefang's journey of searching his parents, Jen (Zhang Ziyi) and Lo (Chang Chen), and his romance with Chun Xueping, who was raised by Jen.

The series is very difficult to adapt and one of the biggest obstacles is how to make the major characters from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon show up in both the sequel and the prequels. Zhang Ziyi's character Jen is not introduced until the fourth book and in the movie, both Jen and Chow Yun-Fat's character Li Mu Bai die, but they are alive in the fifth book.  If Ang Lee could not make it work, then no one would. I hope no prequel or sequel to be made, therefore everyone, who loves the classic film by Ang Lee, can image his or her own prequel and sequel, without being spoiled by a profit-seeking corporation.

CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON Producer Abandons Prequel Option (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

May 21, 2005

According to a report by Beijing Youth Daily, producer Bill Kong has already given up the idea of making a prequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Kong spent the past few months talking to several Hollywood studios, including Sony Pictures the co-financer of  the original film, and failed to bring any one of them into the prequel project. The prequel would tell the story of the early years of Li Mu Bai and Yui Hsui Lien, played by Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Zhang Ziyi's character would not be in the prequel and this was probably the major factor kept Hollywood studios away from the project.

According to Chinese media, an assistance to Hsu Li-Kong, one of the producers of the original film, denied the rumor that Ang Lee would start making the prequel. An assistance to Ang Lee said the financier of the prequel had quit and Ang Lee had already abandoned the prequel. But according to a  representative from Zoom Hunt International Productions Co., Ltd., a Taiwan-based studio co-produced the original film, screenwriter Wang Hui-Ling still works on the script of the prequel and there is no plan of making it this year.

Rumors: CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON Prequel to Be Made This Summer and Jackie Chan Might Play Genghis Khan in TEMUJIN: BATTLE OF THE SEVEN WINGS (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

March 17, 2005

Personally, I seriously doubt the authenticity of the news, but just in case I'm wrong: According to an article posted on Chinese newspaper Yunnan Information, Ang Lee will start making a prequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon this summer in Yunnan Province of southwestern China. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was based on part four of Crane-Iron Pentalogy. The prequel is about the story of young Li Mu Bai and young Yui Hsui Lien, played by Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

The same article also claimed two other projects would also be filmed in the province - Temujin: Battle of the Seven Wings (literal title) and Shan Nü (literal title: Mountain Woman). Temujin: Battle of the Seven Wings is about Mongol tribal chief Temujin's seven day battle against Tartar nation in revenge for the death of his father. Temujin later became Genghis Khan after he unified all Mongols. Director Stanley Tong is lobbying Jackie Chan to play Temujin and Chen Daomin from Hero is also mentioned as a candidate for the role. The cast also includes Chen Hao, Wang Gang, Chen Gangwu and several Shaolin monks and national martial-art champions. Shooting will begin in May or June on three grasslands of Yunnan Province.

Shan Nü will follow the story of a woman called Shan Nü, who raised an abandoned Japanese girl by the end of World War II and the girl later became a great musician. Shan Nü is played by Dongfang Wenying and Chen Gangwu portraies an old musician.

Jet Li Denies Involving In Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Prequel (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

September 3, 2003

20th Century Fox

"No! Not even I know when I took Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon prequel", Jet Li has denies that he would play the role of Li Mu Bai in the prequel. He has been talking to a reporter from Nanfang Daily yesterday during a fashion show in Guangzhou. According to a rumor has been around the globe for several weeks, Jet Li will take the role of Li Mu Bai, originally played by Chow Yun-Fat, and Ang Lee even gave him a copy of the first draft of the script. Jet Li said he did not know whether he would take the project or not and when Ang Lee would start working on the prequel. The role of Li Mu Bai originally belonged to Jet Li but he turned it down for family reason. Then the role landed on Chow Yun-Fat. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was based on part four of novel Crane-Iron Pentalogy. The proposed prequel will be based on part two, Precious Sword, Gold Hairpin, and possibly part three, Sword Force, Pear Shine.

Free CROUCHING TIGER For Torontonians (Toronto International Film Festival)
August 19, 2002

Toronto International Film Festival Group has announced a free screening of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON at Toronto' Harbourfront Centre Concert Stage on August 24th at 9 p.m.

Beware, there are several mistakes in the original press release article. The movie was adapted from the same-name fourth volume of the Crane-Iron Pentalogy (with five volumes not four) and this specific volume was written in 1941 not early 20th century. Furthermore, in the original novel, the time is set in the mid 18th century and in the movie, the time is set in 1745, therefore it is not early 19th century.

CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON Multiplayer Online Game (ZiyiFilms.Com)
June 27, 2002

Korean software publisher Phantagram Interactive has announced that it will develop and publish a multiplayer online game based on Ang Lee's popular kung-fu fantasy film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The game will feature fast-paced kung-fu fighting and an involved storyline. Phantagram plans to launch an official Web site for the game with more details in the coming months. The Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon game is scheduled for release near the end of 2004.

In other related news, software publisher UBI Soft unveiled it's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon game for the Playstation2 and the XBOX last month at E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo). Game reviewer: "What's good about the game is the combat system. At first glance, the game just looked like a standard hack-and-slash game, but in the hands of somebody who knows how to play, it really remind you of the film both in the motions on screen and in the fluidity of the controls."

Along with the Playstation 2 and the XBOX, UBI Soft is also developing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon games for Nintendo's Game Boy and GameCube.  Planned release dates for all four are 11/01/2002, fourth quarter of 2004, 11/01/2002 and 12/02/2002, respectively.

Zhou Xun Might Join CROUCHING TIGER Prequel (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
March 9, 2002

Producer of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON and the prequel PRECIOUS SWORD, GOLD HAIRPIN, Hsu Li-kong, has promised to introduce Chinese actress Zhou Xun to director Ang Lee for this upcoming prequel. In exchange, Zhou Xun has agreed to remain single until the shooting is over because Hsu wanted Zhou to focus on her role. Just finished directing TV series JÜ ZI HONG LE (translation: MANDARIN ORANGE HAS TURN RED) with Zhou Xun as the lead, Hsu has been impressed by her acting and the dance training she received.

Here is the speculation: if Michelle Yeoh returns as Yu Hsu-lien, the only major role left for her will be Xie Cui Xian, another love interest of Li Mu Bai and a non-fighting role, from the original novel. Unless they can add a new role or let her replace Michelle Yeoh.

Zhou Xun has started to draw people's attention by playing the blind girl in Chen Kaige's EMPEROR AND THE ASSASSIN in 1996. Since then she has played lead in many films like SUZHOU RIVER, BEIJING BICYCLE, HOLLYWOOD HONG KONG, and BALZC ET LA PETITE TAILLEUSE CHINOISE, as well as numerous TV series.

CROUCHING TIGER Inspired Italian Designer (Movieline Magazine)
February 26, 2002
Krizia CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON has inspired Italian Fashion designer Mariuccia Mandelli to design the Spring - Summer 2002 Collection of Krizia line. The February / March issue of Movieline Magazine reports "moved by the mythicism and adventure of Ang Lee's CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, Italian designer Mariuccia Mandelli used bold tiger prints and scaly sequins in in her upcoming collection for Krizia." "thought I did not get so much inspiration from the costumes of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, I did get inspired by the title and the movie's fairy-tale spirit," she said, "the title reminded me of the distinct features of a tiger face. I have done many pieces and various accessories with a tiger print, as well my motive with using round pailettes all over many of my short dresses was to make them resemble a dragon's scales."

CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON Prequel: - Shooting Starts May 2003 ! (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
February 5, 2002
According to multiple reports, Hsu Li-Kong, producer of the original, just confirmed that shooting of the prequel of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON will start in May next year and Ang Lee will return as the director. Hsu, a long-time friend and working partner of Ang Lee, is currently in Los Angeles and has met Lee. They have agreed that the script should be penned by Wang Hui-ling from the writing team of the original, to inject the sprit of the original into the prequel. Hsu said this one will "reflect the classic Chinese arts, traditional wuxia spirit and the sole of Chinese martial arts." Unfortunately, the script has yet to be finalized but time is not a big concern. They got over a year to finish it.

The prequel will probably be based on part II (Precious Sword, Gold Hairpin) and part III (Sword Force, Pearl Shine) of the Iron-Crane Pentalogy. The title will like be Precious Sword, Gold Hairpin. In these two parts, young Li Mu Bai met and fell in love with Yu Shu Lien, who had already been engaged to Li's sworn brother Meng Si Zhao. Yes, there is a love triangle and it ended up as a tragedy, just like the original. Li Mu Bai's master Southern Crane, who has briefly mentioned in the original, played an important role in their relationships. It is still too early to tell whether Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh will return but one thing for sure - Zhang Ziyi will not be in. According to another report, Ang Lee has said Chow Yun-fat was not the only candidate for playing Li Mu Bai. Jet Li, who has turned down the role from the original, is also being considered. Ang Lee is currently preparing the big budget comic book based HULK, which will be released in the summer of 2003.

CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON Prequel - Script Rewritten (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
January 6, 2002
Hsu Li-kong, one of the producer of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON,  just briefly talked to Tianjin Daily about the current status of the prequel we are all waiting for, PRECIOUS SWORD, GOLD HAIRPIN.

"Ang Lee has agreed to direct CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON's sequel. Now the script is still not ready. Early when the script was completed, it didn't satisfy me. Now it is being written. Ang Lee won't wait for the script and not take other project. Shooting of his now movie is about to begin (THE HULK). We are very cautious on the planning of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON sequel. (We) won't be same as some people who rush to make cheesy (martial art) movies like a swarm of bees."

CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, The TV Series (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

November 26, 2001

The 1890s' China, it was the decade of corruption, foreign invasion and social unrest. General Yu Rui was called back to Beijing for his action of supporting the Boxers against the West. Came with him, was his daughter Jen followed by her lover Lo. Yu Shu-lien came to Beijing to look for her fiancé Meng Si Zhao and the one killed her father, He Jian E and her husband Zhang Yu Jin. Young swordsman Li Mu Bai following Yu Shu Lien, came to Beijing as well. Jen had an arranged marriage but she could not forget her true love. She encouraged Lo to join The Boxer, hoping he could make some achievement to impress her father. He Jian E and Zhang Yu Jin had received endorsement from the government to crack down the secret society, which attempted to overthrow the Qin Dynasty and restore the Ming Dynasty. As the leader of the secret society, Meng Si Zhao was secretly planning a rebellion and had asked Li Mu Bai and Lo to join. Li Mu Bai thought the priority should be defeating the foreign invasion. He persuaded Lo not to join the rebellion and angered Meng Si Zhao. Meng's ill-planned rebellion was crashed along with his relationship with Yu Shu Lien. Li Mu Bai helped Meng Si Zhao and Yu Shu Lien wiped out He Jian E and her husband. With his assistance, General Yu Rui successfully persuaded the government to turn against the Western invasion. In the end, all our heroes and heroines marched to frontline to face the enemies.

If the film made by Ang Lee is a severely shrunken version of the novel, the TV series shall be called something almost no where near the original. Time was around 1900, rather than the 18th century; All four main characters are around 20; plot of rebellion and movement against foreign invasion was added; Meng Si Zhao who was killed long before this part of the pentalogy, lived through; and last but certainly not the least; Sir Te became a valiant.

The series was a huge successes in Taiwan and has won the best series catagory of Taiwan's Golden Bell Awards.

She said, because Ang Lee is making Hulk and she is busy on the pre-production of Movie Legend (translation), the shooting day for the prequel is still unknown. However, Ang Lee has already gathered a group of writers for the project. About the character Yu Shui Lien, she is hoping to bring something fresh to the audiences. Because the prequel is about the time when Yu Shui Lien and Li Mu Bai were still young, she wants the character to be more innocent and native with a sense of humor. Ang Lee is still in favor of bring Michelle Yoeh and Chow Yun-Fat back for the prequel, Precious Sword, Gold Hairpin.
