Tan Dun Joins Hero (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
May 14, 2001
After winning the Oscar for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, composer Tan Dun has turned down many offers of composing film scores, except for one - Zhang Yimou's upcoming film Hero. Tan said, "film score is only a dessert and music is the main dish. I am on diet recently and dare not to touch dessert. But I will keep doing it."

About Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, he said, "for this film, he (Ang Lee) mortgaged his own house and even lost six credit cards. I remember when he came to see me, the first a couple of words he said is, 'buddy, no money'. And he only gave me ten days, but I didn't disappoint him." Tan Dun wanted to turn him down, but changed his mind after seeing tears in Ang Lee's eyes. "The background music for the scene of "Zhang Ziyi jumping off the cliff" was done on an airplane. On the recording, Ang Lee asked about the music. I said I hadn't heard it either … Just like this, I finished the music for the last ninety minutes in two and half days.

Roger Ebert, The Movie Answer Man, Answering Question About The DVD (Chicago Sun Time)

April 20, 2001

Q. I recently imported the ''Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'' DVD, with both English subtitles and an English dubbed track. I watched the movie in its original Mandarin, with the English subtitles. The sentences on the screen seemed simple and brief. Later, I watched the movie again with the English dub. To my surprise, the dubbed dialogue was vastly different from the subtitles: more poetic, complete, and powerful.

Scott Gillan, Manhattan, Kan.

A. The AM consulted both James Shamus, who wrote the movie, and Sony Pictures vice president Michael Schlesinger. They disagree about the desirability of dubbing, but agree about subtitles.

Schamus: ''First of all, I'm thrilled with his response to the dub--the folks at Sony and we worked long and hard on it, and the results are stupendous. It's probably the best dub into English of any film I know of, certainly of any film from Asia in my lifetime. By comparison, it is more verbally fleshed out than the subtitles, which I am also proud of: Ang Lee and I wrote and re-wrote them, as on all our films. Technical restraints limit the number of characters that can be printed, as well as the amount of time subtitles can stay on screen, and if one wishes people to both read and see one's film those constraints are reasonable. In any case, modern DVD technology is going to change the way we relate to foreign films, giving us the chance to both hear the true grain of the actors' voices and languages, as well as, with the flick of a remote control, enjoying the picture without subtitles.''

Schlesinger: ''The writer is correct. Dubbed dialogue sometimes needs to be 'padded' to match the length of the spoken sentence, while subtitles need to be short so they can be read before the actor finishes the line. For comparison, the writer should check out the DVD of 'Princes Mononoke,' which contains two sets of subtitles: one a literal translation of the Japanese dialogue, the other a more 'fluid' translation. They're subtly but intriguingly different from each other ... and considerably more different than the wretched English dubbing. And in answer to his final question: no, dubbing is never preferable to subtitling, even on a Godzilla movie. One of an actor's most important tools is his/her voice: take that away, and you lose the heart of the performance.''

Zhang Ziyi And Yuen Wo Ping Helping Jet Li To Kill The First Emperor Of China (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

March 14, 2001

Zhang Ziyi has been considered for a role in the upcoming historical epic The Qin Assassination (temporary translation) and Yuen Wo Ping is also being asked by the director Zhang Yimou to join in. Because of Zhang Ziyi's first film The Road Home, directed by Zhang Yimou, she was discovered by Ang Lee.

The film is based on a folk tale of one of the unsuccessful assassinations of Qin Shi Huang DI, China's first emperor from Qin Dynasty, in about 2,200 years ago. According to some very reliable source, Jet Li has agreed to take the role of the assassin. Two years ago, he turned down the role of Li Mu Bai and focused on having a baby with his wife. Seeing the success of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, he has decided to take the role with a lower pay of 4 million US. His character has developed a skill of "Killing a Person within Ten Steps". Being a loyal bodyguard of the First Emperor, he eventually decided to kill the ruthless ruler. During the scene of the final showdown, there will be a brilliant dialogue between them. Jiang Wen, the leading man of Zhang Yimou's first feature film Red Sorghum, will play the First Emperor, the role previously considered for Jackie Chan. Maggie Cheung will play the assassin's lover and her costar in In the Mood for Love Leung Chu-Wai (Tony Leung) may also have a role in it.

The film is produced by Columbia and shooting will start in August this year.
