HERO News 275 - Release Of Extended DVD Pushed Back To July (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive) |
June 25, 2003 |
Tianjin Daily reports the release of the extended version in China has been pushed back to next month. Near 20 minutes will be added back to the 98-minute theatrical version, which has been and will be shown around the world. According to someone from Face Audio & Video Production Co. Ltd., what will be added back includes some subplots, fight scenes and dialogues which could help the audiences to better understand the story and the history background. This is actually not an extended version but the original cut director Zhang Yimou wanted us to see. But, MiramAxe asked Zhang Yimou to trim it to 98 minute long. As the result, some reviewers have criticized the film for having a weak story. Because of SARS, the extended footage has been locked up in Hong Kong ever since. As the theatrical version, the extended version will also be available on DVD-5, DVD-9 and VCD (No video tape). |

| Andy Lau Boards Zhang Yimou's Next Film Officially? (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive) | ||||||
June 9, 2003 |
According to Shenyang Today, Hong Kong action star Andy Lau has officially signed up to play the leading role in Zhang Yimou's next martial-art film, said Zhang Weiping, producer and long-time partner of Zhang Yimou. He said Zhang Yimou is current giving a few final touch on the script and the shooting would start by the end of the year. Meanwhile, according to Hong Kong media, Andy Lau said working with Zhang Yimou was the most he wanted. But he did not say he would be in Zhang Yimou's next film. According to an earlier report by Beijing Times, Zhang Ziyi has already been cast for the untitled project. Rumor indicates she will play a blind swordswoman. The film will not be HERO's sequel and according to some other rumor, the story will be set in Han Dynasty, the one after Qin Dynasty, which was established by The First Emperor, The King in HERO. | HERO News 271 - HERO Extended Version / Original Cut DVD Out This Month (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive) | |
June 6, 2003 |
According to Nanfang Daily, the long-awaited extended version will be released on DVD by the end of June in the mainland China. This is the version MiramAxe would not let anyone to see and so far few people know what has been deleted. A master video cassette containing the deleted 20 minute long footage has already been handed over to the official video distributors - Face Audio and Video Production Co. Ltd. and WeiKai Audio and Video Production Co. on March 1. This version was originally scheduled for a release in April, but SARS stopped it. According to the paper, over 500,000 copies of theatrical DVDs (DVD-5 and DVD-9) have been sold and more copies are being produced. 1 million copies of VCDs have almost sold out. |

| For Zhang Yimou's Next Film - Zhang Ziyi Hired And MiramAxe Fired (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive) | ||||
May 29, 2003 |
According to Beijing Times, producer of HERO Zhang Weijing, said filming of Zhang Yimou's next martial-art film, originally scheduled for next month, had been pushed back for at least two months due to the SARS factor. He said Zhang Ziyi was definitely in but no one else, including Andy Lau, had signed up. Zhang Yimou and his writing team are still working on the script. According to another paper, Shenyang Today, the budget of this untitled project will at lease match the level of HERO, which is US$31 million. He said several Hollywood studios had contact them for distributing the film in North American and other regions. Angered by MiramAxe's doing-nothing strategy for handling HERO, he has positively ruled out MiramAxe as the potential distributor. Photos: http://www.sina.com.cn |

Huo Tingxiao, one of the art director of HERO, told Tianjin Daily that he has singed up to do the art design for Zhang Yimou's second martial-art film. He said the story will be set in Han Dynasty and his is currently collecting historical records about that period. Emi Wada, the costume designer from HERO, will also return to work with Zhang Yimou for the second time. Li Feng, one of the writers of HERO, is still working on the script. Shooting has been set to begin in June or July but may be postponed due to the SARS fear. Rumors suggest Hong Kong star Andy Lau and Zhang Ziyi have been linked to the project but there is yet a done deal. |

| HERO News 266 - HERO Has Not Been Released In North America (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive) | |

April 21, 2003 |
Many readers of this site told me that HERO had been released in North American on April 11th. However, the one being released is called THE HERO, directed by Anil Sharma and starring Sunny Deol. On Yahoo! Movies, two movies are horribly and ridiculously messed together. Enjoy the laugh! ¡¡ Just checked MiramAxe's official site, the HERO page remains unchanged and all those mistakes remain uncorrected. For some reason, the link to this page was taken off from the home page (thanks to Gideon Genesis) for a few weeks and now it is back. |

| The 22nd Hong Kong Film Awards Ceremony (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive) | |
| April 6, 2003 | |
Tonight is the night of INFERNAL AFFAIRS versus HERO. INFERNAL AFFAIRS won two most important awards, Best Picture and Best Director. Leung Chiu-Wai also got the Best Actor title for his performance in the film. HERO has collected most technical awards, but nothing else. Both films has gathered seven awards. Other films were left to compete for the remaining four award, including Best Asian Film award. ¡¡ There are surprise and no surprise. What is not surprising is that Hong Kong production INFERNAL AFFAIRS was awarded with the Best Picture, Best Director and two best actor titles; what is surprising is that HERO, not INFERNAL AFFAIRS, took away most technical awards. |
