Will KILL BILL Vol. 2 Cannibalize HERO? (Various)

January 11, 2004

According to Variety, MiramAxe just pushed Kill Bill Vol. 2's North American release to April 16, the day has been given to Hero for a while. Reportedly, MiramAxe will present it at the Cannes Film Festival. According to Yahoo! Movie, MiramAxe plans to show Hero in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon approach, i.e. releasing in LA and NY (possibly in  Toronto as well) first and then gradually expanding to other cities. So far, no evidence shows a new day has been picked for Hero, but it would not be a total surprise if MiramAxe pushed it back again. Will MiramAxe release two films, belongs to the same genre according to same criterion, on the same day? Will Hero benefited from Vol. 2 or will Vol.2 actually kill Hero?

KILL BILL, The Time Traveler (THE QUENTIN TARANTINO ARCHIVES / Unofficial KILL BILL Homepage)

April 13, 2002

We all know the story of KILL BILL takes place in the present days, but the Chinese scenes do not look like from the present days. Sure, those scenes are flashback, but they got flashbacked too much. Based on the costumes, the street setting and others, the film has been flashbacked to no later than the 1940's!

Gordon Liu Being Asked For Taking More Share Of KILL BILL (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

January 26, 2003

Gordon Liu and Quentin Tarantino

Yesterday at an event promoting the video release of Show Brothers' films, action star Liu Chia-Hui (Gordon) told Hong Kong papers he had been asked to go to the States to shoot more scenes for KILL BILL. Gordon Liu played two roles in the film, the over-a-hundred-year-old Chinese kung-fu master master Pei Mei and the leader of Japanese gang called Crazy 88 (thanks to Jason Powell for reminding me this). Scenes of bother characters were done last summer in Beijing, but somehow Quentin Tarantino has decided more scenes of Gordon Liu is needed. However, Gordon Liu has signed up for three TV productions with Hong Kong's TVB. Though he has not talked with TVB yet, he is hoping he can be let go.

KILL BILL Teaser Q & A (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

January 5, 2002

Q: Why is the plane flying so low?

A: The city looks like Tokyo but the shot was probably inspired by what used to happen in Hong Kong. Back then the old airport was surrounded by buildings and planes were flying just above those buildings when landing and taking off.

Q: What is the name of the club?

A: House of Blue Leaves, a high-class Japanese club. Uma Thurman is fighting with a gang called "Crazy 88". The set was built inside Beijing Film Studio.

Q: Who is the man pulling out of his sword?

A: Sonny Chiba. He is playing Hattori Hanzo.

Q: Why there is a tractor behind Michael Jay White?

A: I don't know. But since the film was partially inspired by the old Shaw Brothers' kung-fu flicks, Quentin Tarantino might throw all kinds of old stuffs into this film. By the way, it was shot at Beijing Film Studio as well.

Q: Who is the long white beard man fighting with Uma Thurman?

A: Liu Chia-Hui (Gordon), who is playing Pei Mei. His beard, eyebrows and hair are just as fake as those of the original Pei Mei from the old Shaw Brothers' films. The scenes were shot at Qi Wang Fen (Tomb of the Seventh Prince - the seventh son of Emperor Daoguang (1840-1891)). It was used to double Pei Mei's temple and the dome like structure behind those trees is the tomb of one of the seventh prince's concubines.

KILL BILL Trailer Description (...)
November 21, 2002

A website has posted a detail description of a just-under-two-minute teaser trailer for KILL BILL, written by someone anonymous:

"It opens with a shot of an airplane flying overhead. Then the music kicks in (wish I could tell you where it’s from because it does ad quite a bit to the kick-ass nature of the whole thing). Screen goes black and in big, red block letters it reads "MIRAMAX FILMS PRESENTS". Fade out. "THE 4TH FILM". Fade out. "BY QUENTIN TARINTINO". Fade out. Then you hear Quentin say "Action!" in the background as a figure wearing motorcycle leathers opens a car trunk. Quick cut to Lucy Liu walking down a hallway with what looks to be her badass entourage behind her (including pre-teen girls in sailor outfits). Cut to Uma on the back of a motorcycle riding through the streets of Japan/China. Cut to an extremely brief shot from some sort of soirée. Cut to Uma, with her back to the camera, sitting at a bar. Another card comes up; it reads: "UMA THURMAN".

Now come the goodies. We cut to Uma in her yellow Game of Death Jumpsuit defending herself form a middle-aged Bald guy dressed in black with a mask (like the one worn by Jet Li in "BLACK MASK") wielding a katanna in each hand. Cut to an extremely close-up of a sword/katanna being unsheathed. Cut to a stare down between a bloodied-looking Uma and Lucy Liu , who is looking mighty virginal in white while snow is falling all around. Cut to a bald black guy dressed in maroon doing some might fancy sword work. Cut to a dirty-faced Uma punching some lady (Daryl Hannah?) who’s coming at her with a staff. Cut to Uma, now in street clothes, fighting a different woman who is coming at her with a frying pan in a kitchen. Cut to a black and white shot of Uma with splotches of blood on her face looking…Shocked, Scared, Confused? Can’t really tell without context. Cut to a limo surrounded (protected?) on all sides by motorcycle escort. Cut to Darryl Hannah walking down a hospital corridor (now with eyepatch!) in a stylish white leather trenchcoat. Cut to one of those pre-teen sailor dress-wearing girls using a bolo. Cut to Uma doing a backflip to avoid the bolos; the harness work here is extremely obvious so I can only hope this is a training scene of some sort. Cut to a montage of Uma’s enemies: A woman I don’t recognize, Daryl Hannah, Lucy Liu, and finally Michael Madsen. Cut to our first and only glimpse of David Carradine as he simply turns to the camera and gives a penetrating stare. Cut to a martial arts sequence in a small village between Uma and an old master-type guy with a long white beard; the scene ends with the master literally standing on the edge of Uma’s blade and then doing a back flip (and kicking Uma in the face). Cut to Lucy Liu in a dojo; she shouts something that quickly rallies the troops and in no time at all Uma, who’s Game of Death jumpsuit is looking bloodier than ever, is surrounded on all sides. Now comes the best shot of the whole damn teaser/trailer, the thing that just makes you go "holy shit!", you know?

We get a crane shot. It starts at eye level on Uma and it slowly raises to the rafters so that we can see that there are something like 25 bad guys surrounding her, all with swords drawn. Uma then raises her sword, indicating she’s ready for’em. Pause. She makes one tiny, defiant movement and (now back to the crane shot where we can see everyone from above) the whole circle of bad guys literally take a synchronized, fearful step back. It’s sooooooo cool. Anyway, moving on…the screen goes black and once again we get big, red block letters but this time they read: "IN THE YEAR". Fade out to someone with blonde hair (pretty sure it’s Hannah again) doing a flying kick. Cut to: "2003". Fade out to an axe flung end over end that whizzes by Uma’s head. Cut to: "UMA THURMAN". Fade out to Uma doing some sort of flip. "WILL". Fade out to more martial art swordplay but now in silhouette. Cut to: "KILL BILL". Fade out to a profile shot of Lucy Liu; she says, "You didn’t think it was going to be that easy, did you?" It then cuts to a profile shot of Uma who responds with, "You know…for a second there, I kind of did." And for the last shot we cut to Uma running up the banister of a staircase to intercept a bad guy with her sword.

End of (one fan-fucking-tastic) trailer ."

KILL BILL Pictures - Inside Beijing Film Studios (The Quentin Tarantino Archives)
November 20, 2002

The Quentin Tarantino Archives just posted some pictures taken inside Beijing Film Studios They only show the small alley KILL BILL was shot, which is only a very small portion of the huge production compound. I am not sure it was built specifically for KILL BILL. I guess not. It is an exact replica of a typical alley, called Hu Tong in Chinese, from the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911). Such kind of alleys can be easily found in Beijing, but are filled with many modern stuffs of cause. Hundreds of movies and TV productions have been shot on the set showing the old Beijing. Some of the most known are THE LAST EMPEROR, FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE, the ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA series, and CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON.

KILL BILL -  On-Location Report And The Scores (Entertainment Weekly / IMDB)

September 25, 2002

Entertainment Weekly has another on-location report: click here

IMDB has the following report:

Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino insisted that only one set of musicians would do for the soundtrack of his upcoming martial arts flick Kill Bill - rappers the Wu-tang Clan. The acclaimed director believes the Staten Island, New York-based rappers are among the best suited for the project, so he called a meeting with the collective's mastermind and producer Rza to perfect his ideas. Tarantino says, "The Wu-Tang Clan, their whole thing is kung fu. I had Rza over to hang out. We watched kung fu movies in my screening room and came up with ideas." The rapper, who produced the critically acclaimed score for Jim Jarmusch's 2000 neo-samurai film Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai, was happy to help a fellow kung fu connoisseur. Rza explains, "We started talking about kung fu, and every movie I named, Quentin knew what it was and what was going on in it. I was like, 'Wow, I kinda met my match.'" While Rza will produce, Tarantino has asked Metallica's Lars Ulrich to help compose the score.

Harry Knowles' Beijing KILL BILL Adventures - Day 2 (AICN)
August 26, 2002

Harry's adventures continue in Beijing. In the second report, he called The Forbidden City, the imperial palace for emperors of Ming and Qin dynasties, "the set of THE LAST EMPEROR". Harry, have you been forgetting your medication or you really don't know? Anyway, he has written down every bit of detail from his staying on the set built inside Beijing Film Studio. He said the set, a "Beijing Backlot", was used for RAISE THE RED LANTERN (not true), THE TAI CHI MASTER and many more. Harry, you forgot CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. He has met truckloads of stars for the first time - Michael Jai White, Dee Dee, Sonny Chiba, and Zhang Ziyi (Don't get excited. She was just dropping by). One more thing - both Quentin Tarantino and Yuen Wo-Ping have denied that they were fighting on the set over the choreography and Harry has found not evidence to prove that they had been fighting.

Interesting Article About Foreign Productions In China, KILL BILL, THE GREAT RAID... (FarEaster Economic Review)
August 22, 2002

Here is a very interesting article about how foreign studios go to China to shoot stories never set in China. Two-month shoot inside Beijing Film Studios is all for scenes set in Japan; a back lot at Shanghai Film Studios will be used to double 1942's Manila in the WWII flick THE GREAT RAID and "they will also use aerial shots of the city's colonial-era Bund to fill in for wartime Manila"; set inside Hengdian Film & TV City will be leased for a movie set in ancient Korea.

Wait, Tarantino Is Still In Beijing! (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
August 9, 2002

Looks like yesterday's report is false. According to China's Mei Ri Xin Bao, the wrapping up date of Beijing shoot has been pushed back to September 2nd.

The paper reports Quentin Tarantino and Yuen Wo-Ping have run into argument several times over how to handle the fight scenes. Tarantino is doing the fights scenes in his own way - a kind of "music video" style, i.e. fight moves must follow some sort of "music". Tarantino has "slaughtered" many moves designed by Yuen Wo-Ping  and Yuen thought many moves designed by Tarantino were "ridiculous". Someone working inside told the paper that Tarantino was inexperienced in making martial-art movies and had under-estimated the complexity of big fight scenes. What have been made inside Beijing Film Studios are almost exclusively fight scenes. He said quite often, actors are "wired" to make the same shot over an over again. Miramax has tight control of any expense outside the budget and has asked Tarantino to delete some scenes several time.

In the movie, The Bride is taking on a gang called "Crazy 88" and members of the gang are played by many Hong Kong stuntmen and wushu athletes hired from the mainland. Much of the fight scenes of Uma Thurman are done by two doubles, one male and one female. She only shows up for the close-up scenes. Even though, they have taken a double-day off twice for the last two weeks because Uma Thurman needed some break. Everyday, there are an ambulance, there doctors and one massage therapist are standing by, just in case anyone being injured on the set.

KILL BILL Onset Report From Beijing (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
July 18, 2002

Uma Thurman learnt  kendo from Sonny Chiba a few month ago in Japan.

photo: SponichiAnnex

Reporter Xie Xiao and intern Luo Yi from Southern City have wrote a very juicy report, giving us a first glance of how bloody the movie will be.

On the set Quentin Tarantino never watches monitor but always follows the camera. Once each shot is completed, he always claps his hands and says something like "very good". Half of the crew is from China and Japan. Among then, there are Executive Director Zhang Jinzhan (LIFE ON A STRING, FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE, TEMPTRESS MOON), Art Director Cao Jiuping (RED SORGHUM, JU DOU, SHANGHAI TRIAD, NOT ONE LESS, TURANDOT - AT THE FORBIDDEN CITY OF BEIJING), and Production Manager Zhou Wei (Assistant Director of HAPPY TIMES and HERO).

All scenes are shot inside No.4 Soundstage at Beijing Film Studios, except one, an outdoor scene shot at Qi Wang Fen (Tomb of the Seventh Prince). At this scene, The Bride played by Uma Thurman is learning martial art from a Taoist monk Pei Mei (Bai Mei in Chinese pronunciation, meaning White Eyebrows) played by Quentin Tarantino. What have been shot in Beijing are all Japanese scenes.

According to a crewmember, the Chinese martial-art style used in the movies is very similar to that from many early Show Bros. movies. The biggest scene, with a fight at a restaurant, involved over 20 men (may also include women) from Yuen Wo-ping's stunt team plus over 100 extras. There are many full-view and close-up shots with chopping off heads, arms and legs. A Japanese company has been hired to make many latex dummies. Equipped with air pump and fake blood, when the head is chopped off, fake blood will be pumped out from the neck. The scene with The Bride walking into a washroom is also the most difficult one to make. Maybe because there are over 100 extras and it was shot in the first week when the coordination was still limited, the three and a half minute sequence cost a whole day to make. Two stuntwomen were hired to double Uma Thurman, one from America for full-view scenes and one from China for fight scenes. The crewmember said Uma Thurman's character, The Bride, is different from the role she played in PULP FICTION and is closer to herself in real life.

Uma Thurman's husband Ethan Hawke and their two kids are staying in Beijing with her. Some producers are also accompanied by  their families. Since shooting started last month, they have been working over 15 hours every day. Beijing production was schedule to end on August 3, but because many actions scenes are so difficult to make and so time-consuming, they may have to stay in Beijing for at least two more weeks. Rest of the shooting will take place in Japan, Mexico and Los Angeles.

Quentin Tarantino Interview - KILL BILL And Others (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
July 17, 2002

photographer: Feng Ke

photo: SINA.COM

While Quentin Tarantino is still killing Bill in Beijing, people from China's New Cinema magazine have become the first to actually sit down with him since the shooting started. While waiting for Tarantino inside Beijing Film Studios located in the northwest part of the city, they spotted a few blonde girls leaning on a black Audi 2000. Among them, is Uma Thurman and she was smoking!

Before the magazine's photographer could take a decent shot, she turned her face away from the camera,  went into the car and disappeared behind dark windows.
