When Rush Hour came out, I considered it
as a smart move for Jackie Chan and the follow-up, Shanghai Noon,
was equally exciting for me. Then I realized the Hollywood formula was
only treating Jackie Chan as a funny stuntman, or worse, a circus
clown. Every time he was forced to act as a man half of his age and
to partner with an half-of-his-age American sidekick, who usually
took half of the show. Sequels to Rush Hour signed the fatal flaw
of such formula, but because it was so profitable, the alarm was
ignored, which contributed to the total failure of some of his most
recent Hollywood projects. However, just when you thinks Jackie Chan's career
is going through a downward spiral, he returned to Hong Kong,
reclaimed his roots, and made New Police Story

Jackie Chan Talks - 80 DAYS, PINK PANTHER, RUSH HOUR 3, NEW POLICE STORY,
THE MYTH...
(About.com) |

Jackie Chan cameos in The Twins
Effect. (EMP)

Jackie Chan just talked to Fred Topel
from About.com, apparently about his current and future
projects. Besides Around The World In 80 Days, he has
commented on several projects he will do, might do and will not do.
He is in talk for doing Pink Panther but he has been lost
in endless meetings. He still don't like
Rush Hour franchise but he will do the third one - "a little bit
serious" this time. His newest project, The Myth, not related
to Titanium Rain and Time Breaker, he said, is "more like
Indiana Jones", "not very technology" and "like an old fashioned
story". In the movie, Jackie Chan's character, an archeologist, will
"find the Ching Dynasty tomb
(should be Qin or Chin Dynasty. a mistranslation)", "also help the
American NASA do something" and he will "go to India". Jackie Chan
also said he was not going to sell his New Police Story to any US
distributor, because, presumably, he was afraid that it would not be
treated properly.

(Thanks to Mark Singh and Marie M)
About The Myth, Korean actress
Kim Hee-Sun has been cast to play the girl repeatedly showing up
in Jackie Chan's dreams and
Hugo Weaving will play the main valiant,
according to an
Korean newspaper. Title of the project is SO4 and it is budgeted at
about US$30 million. The paper said Jackie Chan would get US$15 million
(I don't think so) and Kim would get 1 million. Also according to
the Korean paper, the script is penned by
Wang Hui-Ling (Crouching Tiger,
Hidden Dragon) and the story is somewhat based on a Korean
folklore. In the movie, Jackie Chan will play an ancient warrior and
a modern day Indiana Jones. The Hong Kong part has been done last
month and shooting will restart next month in Shanghai. Release has
been targeted at next summer in over 60 Asian and European countries
(no mention of North America).

Chan will finally start working on Time Breaker next month with
director Stanley Tong. This project is in fact not related to
Titanium Rain, which has dried out. Budgeted with US$40 million,
this one will feature a time traveling Jackie Chan with two love
stories. Stanley Tong says it will show relatively less Jackie Chan
action and more Jackie Chan acting. Production will take place in Yunnan,
the the province now hosting The Twins Effect 2. Also according
to Chinese media, Jackie Chan may still quit the sequel, to release the
pressure on his son, who is also in the project.

NEW POLICE STORY
Over-Budgeted And Over-Timed
(MonkeyPeaches Exclusive) |
|
November 25, 2003 |
|
According to Hong Kong's Oriental Daily
and The Sun, the production of Jackie Chan's New Police Story is
severely over-budgeted and over-timed. The budgeted HK$100 million
(US$12.9 million) has almost run out. Last week Jackie Chan asked his
long-time partner
Willie
Chan to add 20 million more and the answer he got was "no". To ease
the tension between them, Yeung Sau-Shing the big boss of Emperor Group
which is co-producing the film, personally pumped in 20 million.
According to these two papers, Jackie Chan has designed lots of
expensive big scenes. A two minutes scene alone would burn three million
on location. He has added a few more car-blowing-up-in-street scenes,
which required another month to complete.

During a shot only involving Jackie Chan and a stunt actor playing the

waist got tangled with the rope and the stunt actor almost fell to the

Jackie Chan and Nicholas Tse (AP) |
Shooting of the fifth of Police Story
series, under the title New Police Story, will start this
month, according to Nanfang Daily. Director
Benny Chan said the story
was not too complicated and it follows the good vs. the bad
tradition of previous Police Stories.
Nicholas Tse will play
another cop and
Charlene Choi play her girlfriend.
The bad guys will be portrayed by
Daniel Wu,
Wang Chieh(?),
Terence Yin and
Andy On. Benny Chan also
said there would be a lot more hand to hand fights and less CG
effects (How about no CG effects?). Now the biggest unanswered
question is who will play Jackie Chan's girlfriend, possibly wife?

According to Hong Kong media, Jackie Chan has promised the coming of the
fifth POLICE STORY with a budget of HK$80 million (US$10.3 million). He recently
pumped HK$18 million into Hong Kong studio EMG and opened a
joint-venture with EMG. The new POLICE STORY will be the first
production of the new company.
Nicholas Tse and
Charlene Choi (one
of The Twins) have made their commitment to the project. There is no
word whether
Maggie Cheung, played Jackie Chan's girlfriend in the
first three movies, will return or not, but Jackie Chan has said in January
that he wanted his character Chan Ka Kui to marry his girl
friend in the final installment of the series. The sequel will be helmed by
Benny Chan (HEROIC DUO,
GEN-Y COPS, GEN-X COPS, WHO AM I?
Jackie Chan appeared on
"Total Request Live" on MTV last week. He was asked when the
next RUSH HOUR would come and he replied "next year." I think he
actually meant he would start working on the sequel next year, but
the sequel itself would not come out next year.
