Tsui
Hark was the flagcarrier of Hong Kong action movies during the 1980's
and early 1990's. Then we shared the pain of his shameful and short mis-adventure
in the Hollywood and we felt sorry for a couple of his movies being
overkilled by CG effects a few years ago. Now, Tsui Hark is back, with
Seven Swords, a character-driven and action-packed adventure.

According to an incomplete statistic released by the distributor,
Seven Swords' 3-day revenue (Friday - Sunday) in the mainland China
is about 26 million yuans (US$ 3.21 million) and the accurate 3-day
number for Hong Kong is HK$ 2.57 million (US$ 0.33 million). It did not
break any record but the result is very encouraging. However, video
distribution, cable deals and overseas sales are still needed to cover
the production cost of HK$ 140 million
(US$ 18.01 million). Tsui Hark said he would do sequels, as he had
planned, if Seven Swords did well at the box-office.

Tsui Hark Talks: SEVEN SWORDS
Sequels, JOURNEY TO THE WEST and Brigitte Lin Biopic

Tsui Hark has talked briefly about what
he would do next. He said although up to six sequels to Seven Swords
were in planning, he was not so confidence about making all six of them.
He said it would be up to how well Seven Swords do in the market.
What Tsui Hark really wants to do is to adapt the classic fantasy novel
Journey to the West. The major
challenge of making it possible is to get the script right and he has
been working on it for years. According to another
report, Tsui Hark will soon direct a biopic of
Brigitte Lin,
who will be played by
Cecilia Cheung.

Director Tsui Hark just restated his ambitious plan of making Seven
Swords a seven-party series during an interview with Beijing-based
Sina.com. The movie tilled Seven Swords, which will get a
pan-Asian release starting July 29, was only based on the first chapter
of the original book, Seven Swordsmen Leave Heaven Mountains, by wuxia
novelist Liang Yu-Sheng. Tsui said the story of the book was so rich
that one or two movies were not enough.

Peter Webb said
this time his job is the most relaxed, according to Chinese newspaper
The Beijing News. He said he was only responsible for removing
wires, fixing revealing or continuity problems and grading the colors. The weather
of locations in Xinjiang often changed very frequently and
unexpectedly, therefore digital grading during the post-production was needed
to fix the lighting problem. Webb said he could not control
the sword movement of Donnie Yen (playing
Chu Zhaonan) or Sun Honglei (playing Fire-Wind), but
he could make the audiences feel they are on the scene personally.
