How's SHAOLIN SOCCER Doing In N. America (Box Office Mojo)

April 5, 2004

Shaolin Soccer made US$37,000 at 6 theaters during the past weekend. (click here) Average gross for each theater is US$6,166. It was not a bad start and not not highly successful either. Will it go wider this weekend? By the way, it is subed not dubbed, though still chopped.

Note: Infernal Affairs is also scheduled for August 20, 2004. Ridiculous! (Thanks to Daniel Zelter for the reminder).

MiramAxe Adds More Cities For SHAOLIN SOCCER'S North American Opening Day (Unkown)
February 22, 2003

According an unconfirmed source from the inside, number of cities for the scheduled March 26 release has been increased to ten. The plan came out last October is for limited release in New York, Los Angeles and possibly Toronto, and then extend it to other cities. It will still be subtitled, though edited somewhat, and any last minute change has been barred.

Is MiramAxe Pushing For A Video-Only SHAOLIN SOCCER In North America?

(MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

January 23, 2004

Kung Fu /

Kung Fu Hustle

Beijing based Youth Times has reported that MiramAxe might have planned to push Shaolin Soccer straight to video in North America. Here is the full story according to the paper: Stephen Show sold Shaolin Soccer's North American rights to MiramAxe for a less favorable price. With the low-price strategy, he was betting on an entrance to the Hollywood and MiramAxe financed sequels. Then MiramAxe started to practice its routine tricks (re-editing, dubbing, etc.) on Shaolin Soccer and delayed the release again and again. When Kung Fu (Kung Fu Hustle) was ready for production, Sony, rather than MiramAxe, jumped in as the financier. If Shaolin Soccer was successful in North America, Sony would take the advantage and release Kung Ku. Now MiramAxe, which does not own the rights to Kung Fu, would only release Shaolin Soccer on video, and without a theatrically released Shaolin Soccer, Sony would push Kung Fu straight to video as well. I am not sure how authentic the report is. Can anyone prove it or disprove it?

According to Yahoo! Movies, MiramAxe's newest strategy for Shaolin Soccer is still "to start with LA/NY on March 26th, and then expand from there," and MiramAxe's official Shaolin Soccer site has not been updated for a long time.

Posters: SHAOLIN SOCCER And THE MEDALLION (MiramAxe / Latino Review)

June 19, 2003

SHAOLIN SOCCER: faces of Stephen Chow and Zhao Wei are digitally altered so much, which made them hardly recognizable. The skyscrapers on the back are not from the film.

THE MEDALLION: Lee Evans is left out, but Claire Forlani stays.

Both films will be released in North America the coming August - SHAOLIN SOCCER on the 8th and THE MEDALLION on the 15th.

HERO News 246 - HERO Cannibalizes SHAOLIN SOCCER (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)

February 25, 2003

Hong Kong's Sing Pao reports MiramAxe just pushed the released date of SHAOLIN SOCCER back again, for the fourth time, and shifted the effect onto HERO. MiramAxe's bid for the Oscar's Best Foreign Language Film category was CITY OF GOD. But after HERO was "unexpectedly" nominated for the award which was missed by CITY OF GOD, HERO has suddenly become very bankable. It is still up to MiramAxe to decide whether and how to bank it. If Sing Pao's report was true, HERO would probably be released in April in North America which was originally reserved for SHAOLIN SOCCER. According to Greg's Previews, the new release date for SHAOLIN SOCCER is August 8, 2003. I just checked MiramAxe's official site. HERO is still not in and SHAOLIN SOCCER remains at the "Upcoming Films" section.

Stephen Chow Dubbed Himself In SHAOLIN SOCCER (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
August 20, 2002

Stephen Chow in fact contributed his own voice to the Miramax's dubbed version of SHAOLIN SOCCER.

Tin Kai-man, played Iron Jacket, told Hong Kong's Oriental Daily that Stephen Chow spent three days in the States to dub himself. Miramax even provided a specialist to teach him how to do dubbing. Miramax has announced a new date for the North American release - April 11th, 2003. In France, SHAOLIN SOCCER, probably the same Miramax cut, will be released in about 300 theaters. Something About Stephen Chow's Next (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive)
August 1, 2002

China's Information Times just revealed a little bit secret of Stephen Chow's next movie. According to his manager Tin Kai-Man, the outline of the script is completed. The story will take place in the 1950's Hong Kong and the mainland. Stephen Chow will play a young nobody, who was obsessed with martial arts but did not really know how to fight. After he accidentally bumped into several real kung-fu masters, something really funny happened. This untitled movie will follow the same format from SHAOLIN SOCCER - comedy, action and CG effects, but will have more complex plots and a bigger budget. Stephen's character will similar to the one he played in KING OF DESTRUCTION. The writing team of SHAOLIN SOCCER is currently working on the script and it may take about half year to complete.

SHAOLIN SOCCER Pushed Back Again (Greg's Previews of Upcoming Movies - Yahoo!)
July 19, 2002

According to Greg's Previews, the Miramax has pushed the North American release SHAOLIN SOCCER to the first quarter of 2003. Just not very long ago, Miramax announced to release it in Los Angles and New York on August 30 and then gradually expand to other cities. The application submitted to MPAA is indeed for SHAOLIN SOCCER not KUNG FU SOCCER.
